BSOD on start up only

Hi,

I have a fairly new desktop PC and have a problem with a BSOD error at cold start up only. It can vary as to what the error is from System_Memory to Memory_management and others that I can't recall right now. I have attached the minidump file. I thought it might be the Kasperspy Internet Security as it only started doing this after I started installing programs and drivers (I have done a clean install and returned machine (where machine was bought and they tested all components like ram etc).

So I don't believe that it is a hardware issue as it does not do it when machine has a fresh install without any other programs on it. I got the guys to look at the minidump file from Kaspersky and they state that the CDD.DLL file is causing the problem. I did a sfc /scannow and that came through without any errors.

To overcome the problem I just do a hard reset and the machine runs perfect from there (no restarts or errors during use). The BSOD appears just before the log in screen (can see the windows background etc) where you type in your password.

Hope someone can help as this is just annoying to start machine twice on cold start. If I reboot/restart machine the problem won't reappear until it is cold (if you know what I mean).

First off, I'd completely uninstall Kaspersky as a test. This has a great chance of fixing it alone.

If it doesn't, run Memtest overnight to test your RAM modules.

Also, make sure the motherboard bios is set correct for the Vdimm (RAM voltage) and timings. Visit the RAM maker's site for info on your specific modules. Use CPU-Z spd tab if you aren't exactly sure which modules they are.

Did memtest and no problems (I didn't think so as it only does it at start up and not any other time). I uninstalled Kaspersky and now it is coming up with some new errors. There was a System Service Exception error and a msrpc.sys error as well.

I have checked the settings and they are correct as per the manufacturers website for the timings etc.

I have attached the latest minidump for someone to have a look at. Is it possible that a HDD could be stuffed? It is weird that no other time except for cold start that i encounter any errors.

Alright, now if you update your video card driver to latest from ATI, it should be alright.

It's a 0x3B stop error - "This error has been linked to excessive paged pool usage and may occur due to user-mode graphics drivers crossing over and passing bad data to the kernel code."

Ok then I actually updated that driver for my Vid card this morning and when I just got home from work I switched on the PC and had a Bad Pool error (never had that one). I attached my minidump file. I will try and reseat the vid card and see how that goes. Maybe I need to try an old driver for it. Or maybe just the one on the disk that came with it. Might try that next.

That's always a step backwards when reverting to old drivers. I never recommend it.
The only different case is when gamers are looking for best performance and they all work for him/her. (And even then...eh)

Back again after house move with similar problems. I am starting to think that it may be the HD or Raid setup that is causing the problems. Other thing I have noted is the long shut down it takes when turning off the PC.

I have 2 x WD 500g HDD in raid. Have also got a new error this time. It was a IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL from what I can recall. Dump file added. The PC did a chkdsk and it repaired some files. I only saw from a distance (eating breakky) and didn't notice it was a different error until it was too late.

Kaspersky also database was corrupted when I restarted PC (usual work around).

Also if there are any drivers to update please let me know (I think that this is my main problem if not hdd related well my guess anyways.

Are you running any Norton ptroucts?

Do you have a registry cleaner installed?

Go to Start < Run, and type cmd, Now type sfc /scannow

Here are the possible causes
The common causes for the blue screen of death and the solutions to fix it are as follows:
1. Device driver problems - when new hardware is added to the computer, the device drivers may not be compatible. Try to get the latest updated version of the device driver from the manufacturer website. If it still does not work, remove or uninstall the new hardware and check if the problem continues.
2. New software installed may also cause a problem, so uninstall any new software. Viruses and spy ware can also cause problems, so ensure that you have the latest version of antivirus software installed and check your computer regularly. How to remove all spyware, adware and run a free antivirus program
3.Hardware problems. Computer components like the CPU, fan, RAM start malfunctioning after some time, especially if you use your computer for more than 10 hours a day. Computers with AMD Athlon CPU's generate more heat compared to Intel CPU's and so this problem seems to be more common with these computers.
4. A simple configuration change which I made, after which I never faced the problem of Blue Screen of Death.
a) In most computers the RAM memory is shared between the system and graphics - for example , for 128MB , 96 MB is for the system and 32 MB is for graphics (default setting). Reduce the memory for graphics to the minimum - 8 MB
b) Change the virtual memory settings
My Computer ----> Properties ----->Advanced ------> Performance -------> Advanced ---------> Virtual Memory
For paging file size, select custom file size , with initial size 500 MB and final size 1000 MB. Save the settings. You can increase the paging file size further according to the software programs you use.

You have a hard drive problem. Run this from an elevated command prompt for each partition on the system, changing C to match the partition letter each time:

chkdsk /r C:

So just to make sure, besides the chkdsk is there a program that does a good diagnostic on the HDD in raid? I really want to get rid of this problem and if it is just some HDD's then they are fairly cheap I will go get more and take these ones back for replacement.

Yes, but run that command I said for each partition. That may stop the bsod.
