BSOD turned into "Black screen of death" -cannot boot into BIOS.

Dear everybody,

I have a Asus G73JW laptop with 2 x 500gb HDD, both has two partitions;
Win7 ultimate; 64 bit;
Nvidia geforce GTX460M, 1,5gb;
CPU: :Intel Core i7 - 740QM, 1,73 GHz; Ram = 8GB;
EAX advanced HD 5.0; THX trustudio
Security: AVG antivirus with windows firewall on at all times.
This laptop has not been the same since my wife, accidentally opened a zip file which was attached to an e-mail. I reinstalled windows [ must admit I did not format the windows partition, before installing it ]. I restarted after each and every installation of the different drivers. I got the 1st BSOD whilst installing Nvidia drivers. After this I started getting random BSOD on shut down and start up. I uninstalled the Nvidia driver and restarted the laptop and noticed that it installed an older driver for Nvidia. It was okay for a couple of days , but then I got a BSOD boot loop, I then did a MBR repair which seemed to work for a couple of weeks. This past weekend my wife and I was on sites advertising cars that are for sale and used google maps to get to the different dealers. The laptop's power cable disconnected by accident, battery went flat during the night and when I restarted it , it initially showed a BSOD, restarted and since then I get this black screen of death. The Asus logo does not even come up, the keyboard lights come on and you can hear the HDD running and later the DVD drive, but nothing else happens. I cannot get into the BIOS [ F2 is suppose to get you into it, but F2 does not work and neither do the F4, F8, F11,ESC or DEL keys. My BIOS is setup to boot from HDD 1st, then the DVD drive, at the moment. I cannot boot from my Asus system repair disc and neither from the Win 7 DVD or from the Minitool bootable cd ??

Is there anybody with any suggestions, I apologise for not being able to post the dump files or a more thorough list of system specs, but as you can see I have absolutely no access to the laptop.

Hi,

Firstly keep your wife off the machine

Try this (It may or may not work):

Shutdown the computer and remove power lead, take out the battery and press the
power button for 40-45 seconds then reattach the battery and plug in the power cord.

Does the laptop boot now?

Hi Dave, thank you for trying to help, I appreciate it. I am heeding your advice -- bought my wife her own laptop! I omitted to mention , but I did what you suggested before { got it off the forums }, did try again now, still with no luck. I am not sure whether this will help, but I made a copy of my device manager some time ago, will attach it, just in case it might help.

Did you install the drivers from the Asus site? Also, do I understand correctly that your Wife opened a file that most likely had a virus in it?

Hi Essenbe, thanks for responding, yes I got the drivers from the Asus site and yes this started with her opening a zip file attached to an e-mail. I then re-installed windows on the windows partition and then things proceeded as described in my original post.

Well geotre, this is really Northernsoul's area of expertise and it would probably be best for him to deal with it. But, my opinion is, FWIW, if your Wife released a virus in the computer and you installed over it, there is a good chance you still have it. A lot of viruses can live through that. You can get rid of them though. Let Dave finish this with you and if that determination is made, I would completely wipe the drive clean and reinstall. That's what I would do if it were mine and I thought I had no hardware or driver issues. If Dave makes that determination, I will be happy to tell you exactly how to do it, unless he wants to. This is the BSOD section of the Forums and he has that BSOD Team badge, I am just an intruder. But, if you and Dave want me to come back and help, I'll be more than happy to.

Well, Essenbe thanks for intruding, I would love to wipe the drive clean [ or rather the partition windows is on ] and start anew, that is actually what I was trying to do, but as you can see from my first post I cannot boot from my windows dvd and neither from a Minitool bootable cd, I can literally not get into the laptop.

Can you remove the hard drive from the laptop and plug it into a desktop ?

Hi Vistaking, I could try, will the desktop connections fit the laptop HDD? There are two HDD in the laptop, how do I determine which one has the OS? Sorry for all the questions , but I am new at this. If I manage to do this what do I do next? I am at work at the moment, but can try to do what you suggest later today.

The hard drive on the right hand side ( below the memory ) should be the one with Windows installed . If your desktop has a SATA DVD Drive the cables for that will work on the laptop hard drive .

   Note

Turn off the laptop and remove the battery before you remove the hard drive

Use tdsskiller to scan the hard drive

Save to the Desktop

Right-click the program and select

When the TDSSKiller console opens, click on: Change Parameters
Under Additional Options, place a check in the box next to: Detect TDLFS File System

Click: OK


Press: Start Scan


If a suspicious object is detected, the default action is Skip, leave it as is, and click on: Continue
If malicious objects are found, they show in the Scan results.
Ensure Cure (the default) is selected, then click: Continue > Reboot now, to finish the cleaning process.
(Note: If Cure is not available, select Skip, >>Do not select: Delete<<)


When done, the tool outputs its log to the disk with the Windows Operating System, normally C:\


Logs have a name like:

C:\TDSSKiller.X.X.X_12.04.2013_15.31.43_log.txt


Please post the TDSSKiller log in your reply.

You could create a Kaspersky live CD or bootable USB to scan the hard drive on your laptop hard drive

I managed to connect the Asus HDD to the desktop and was able to boot into it - said unable to start windows, but at least gave me the choice to do a system repair, that did not work so it asked me whether to restore to earlier version which I accepted. Then did start up repair x 2, but could not fix the problem. Windows installation DVD was in the desktop computer so it booted to it and wanted to reinstall windows, but I declined as the desktop is a 32bit and the laptop a 64bit system.[ was that right not to do?] I then put the HDD back into the laptop. First couple of tries same black screen and then suddenly it booted straight into windows!! The Asus screen did not come up and thus neither the option to go into BIOS. I am actually typing from the laptop at the moment and is making the Kaspersky rescue disc as you suggested. I see the TDSSKiller did not find any threats. I 'll keep you up to date. Thanks.
I just saw your comment about the rootkits that was not found - what does that mean - sorry, but I know very little.

You misread my post, I did try to restore, but when it asked me whether I wanted to reinstall windows I thought that because the desktop computer is a 32 bit system and my laptop is a 64 bit system it was not going to work - was that wrong????

I`m sorry but you can try to visit your asus service center and ask why and how

No, it wasn't wrong. The desktop has different hardware. You should install with the drive in the machine you're going to use the drive in. On restart go into bios and see if you see your CD/DVD drive there. Set it as 1st boot device and your hard drive as second boot device. I would reset bios to defaults first.
