Running Windows732 bit, 4 gig of ram.

Computer very slow to boot and then will either boot to a desktop that is frozen, or will hang at the "Welcome" screen for a while and then crash to a BSOD with several different versions of a 0x00000007E error.

Error message mentions BIOS and turning of caching and shadowing.

I have run multiple malware and virus checks (nothing showed up) and defragged the drive.

Took out and cleaned contacts of ram and video card.

Might boot normally on occasion but that is increasingly rare.

Noticed today that after a boot to frozen screen the CPU usuage was at either 0% or up to 2%.

Any help/hints etc would be appreciated....(keep in mind I'm very close to being a noob)

First thing, you shouldn't be running two antivirus apps together. Please remove Avast! Internet Security: using its removal tool from here: Uninstallers (removal tools) for common antivirus software - ESET Knowledgebase

Please keep only Microsoft Security Essentials. It does not cause any BSOD.

Perform a System File Check to check the integrity of all protected Windows 7 :
  1. Click on the start :orb:
  2. Type CMD on Search
  3. Left click and Run as Administrator
  4. Type
    Code:
    SFC /scannow
Full tutorial here:
Disk Check on your hard drive for file system errors and bad sectors on it.
Number down items at start-up. Keep only your anti-virus, this also improves the time for logging into windows.
Upload a screenshot of your hard disk using CrystalDiskInfo:
Make a hard drive test from the hard drive manufacturers website:
Take memtest. Run for 8 passes and test each stick in a know good slot for an additional 6 passes.
   Note
Pay close attention to part 3 of the tutorial in order to rule out the faulty stick.

   Information
Errors are sometimes found after 8 passes.

   Tip
Do this test overnight, before going to bed.

If Memtest86+ does not find any errors with ram run Windows Memory Diagnostics for 7-8 passes following its tutorial: Let us know the results.

Thaks very much for replying, appreciate it - I'll attempt to give all this a go tonight and post the results.

Edit: I altered the start-up menu the other day myself but somehow disabled audio...last night I just restored default start-up and it's ok again,.

How am I supposed to know which items can and cannot be disabled from the start-up?
