BSODs when overclocking QX9650

Hello everyone,

I have been trying to overclock my lovely new QX9650 and i keep getting BSODs when i overclock 3.5 or above.

I have set the voltages which have been set as high as 1.27365 (i think it was, it was the lowest setting for 1.27. I have set the PLL and VTT. i have set the ram timings loose as well as setting the voltage for the ram. I have also turned off things like speedstep and C1E. Nothing helps.

I have used multipliers 9.0, 9.5, 10.0, 10.5 and 11.0.

I have had different FSBs, some of which would not allow the BIOS to POST.

For ref. The BSODs i have had are, 0x01E and 0x07E and i have also had the ones where something was terminated or did not load into the CPU.

The BSODs will stop as soon as i reset the clocks back to stock and all will be ok again. I have also ran Intel Burn Test with 10 tests and all passed with flying colours (Funny thing though, the time it took for one test to complete was getting on for 500 sec's and to me, thats not good as my old Q9300 which was oc'd to 3.0ghz took exactly the same amount of time).

Can anyone please point me in the right direction or tell me where i am going wrong. I don't really want to raise the voltages anymore as the temps were already being read as 39 degrees c when set to the voltage stated above but if i do then please say how far i should go, i don't want to fry my little QX. i only had it a couple of weeks.

Those BSODs are the cpu/memory telling you, "Please stop doing this to me."

The actual BSOD types are of no interest. You know why they're happening and that's all that matters.

You do realize that all CPU's don't overclock well, right? It's also possible that your motherboard or RAM doesn't like it either.

You have a very nice processor and it should be nice and fast right at the clock speeds. I'd suggest just leaving them there since the machine runs happy. It's clearly shown that it doesn't like to overclock.

Just bump the VTT up until it boots. Just be sure to find the max voltage for that CPU (I think it's 1.4 but don't know for sure)

That's how overclocking goes. You have to be careful however and take the risk that you may damage something.

Well as an update, I tried and tried to get further but it did not happen.

I could get it as far as 3.40ghz and that was it, after that the BSODs start.
I did even get 3.50ghz to boot into windows and it was not until i started Intel Burn Test, and it did get passed one test (believe it or not) but it then BSOD.
So i know it is possible.

I am sorry but i am not totally convinced that my CPU is un-overclokerable. The thing is, before this CPU i had a Q9300 which, funnily enough, had the same problem. To sort that issue out, i just ramped up core voltage which worked and i managed to clock that to 3.10ghz (yes, i managed to get it to 3.10ghz).

I think my issue lies with the BIOS issue as i am using a Striker II Extreme and the BIOS is soden with issues.

I will try that as soon as i can get one. I can't use the proper Asus one (for different reasons), so till i can, i am going to assume its down to that.

My CPU did not work properly on stock anyway until i set the voltages, and of course i am now running my QX at a fully stable 3.33ghz which has been burn test tested and it has had 3Dmark vantage and PCmark vantage running and all has been great.

Oh, and i can also tell you, my ram is fine to overclock. Put it this way, i have 8gb of Reaper-X 1333mhz and i have had this ram running at 1600mhz with no issues and all test passed, burn test, memtest and 3Dmark Vantage. So i can at least vouch for that, its just that to do that, i had to run my cpu on stock (but this all happened when i had my Q9300)

I will let you all know in good time when i get to push this little bugger of a CPU.
