Solved Cannot Boot From Recovery CD

You can install them with Dism++

Direct Download Dism++ x86/x64

1. Make sure your operating system is highlighted in blue ( your currently running OS it will be highlighted blue automatically ). If not, click on it to highlight it.

2. Click Drivers in left panel

dism++-drivers1.jpg

3. Click ADD button

dism++-drivers2.jpg

4. Browse to the C:\DELL folder containing your extracted drivers.

Applicable drivers will be installed for you.

SIWI2...I see that the drivers I need (r252544, r257292 and r279558) are on the dell drivers cd. I appreciate all the instructions you provided, but just installing that cd seems easier, given my inexperience. Is it risky because I have a new hard drive, or for some other reason?

If you have the drivers setup utility on the CD, you should be able to just install them from there.
I don't know of anything risky about that.

I was under the impression installation from the cd wasn't working for you , so suggested dism++ method instead.

Voila, I am connected to Wireless! Very sorry for the confusion...I had trouble browsing to the Dell CD for what I thought I needed. But once the disk was in, I installed the WLAN driver, and it works! Now my question is...how to get the screen to look more normal. There are 5 drivers on the Dell CD under "Video Driver." Should I install them? Also, the only driver still marked yellow in Device Manager is under Other Devices\PCI Simple Communications Controller" There is a "Communication Driver" on the Dell disk--D400 External USB 56K Modem Rev. A02" Should I install that? Heck, maybe I should install all the drivers on the Dell CD?

You could use the video driver from the cd. If there is a more recent version windows update may find it for you later.

Yes, installing the video drivers from the CD did the trick...everything looks normal now. I reloaded my Firefox bookmarks, restored my home page, and now have only to set up Outlook tomorrow. I am sure I tried your patience with my ineptitudeer this past month, but I have learned so much, and am very grateful. The computer is working better than ever. Will let you know tomorrow how outlook goes, then mark this saga resolved!

Just to keep you posted---busy today reloading printer and saved data. Only problem so far is the bluetooth driver. I downloaded the one recommended by Dell, tried to install it, but keeps saying that bluetooth device not found I wll keep trying.

Type msinfo32 into start search. Click it when it pops up.

Expand the + next to Components, then click on Problem devices.

msinfo32.jpg

It should then show the pnp device id. of any problem devices in the right pane of msinfo32.

Then at top left of MSINFO32 window click File>Export and save it as a .txt file.

Okay, did that. this is what the saved file looks like. I know there is no driver for the PCI...not sure where to find it.

The wireless printer is working fine, so not sure what those two files mean.

I will be away from computer for a couple of days. Thanks again for all your help.

OK, now I installed the Intel Management Engine Driver, and my Fitbit works, thanks! I didn't install every driver listed on the Drivers and Utilities disk, because things seem to be working well, and also because Windows installed about 200 updates, but maybe I should. Out of town for a few days, so I will check back in when I return. I did have a question about my old hard drive (Seagate 500 GB), which the computer shop returned. Is it safe to give away for parts, or could someone access my old data on there? I noticed that people do give them away free on my local Freecycle list. But I can take a hammer to it if necessary!

Attach the old HDD to a Desktop (or on a USB case) and run a program (like MiniTool Partition Wizard) that randomly puts 0 or 1 on every bit (Wipe disk function).
Or as you said, use the hammer on it.

Hello again....things going well here, just a few glitches now and then. Like now I can't get drop-down menus to work on any web site. So I downloaded Java, still doesn't work. But I can research and probably fix. Just didn't want to mark this resolved until I'm 100%. Getting there, and computer is working great. So thanks for everything.

If you are using Internet Explorer Browser, I can't help you with that. I use FireFox.
