Cannot boot up (stops at disc.sys)

I hope this is in the right forum, I am sorry if I am mistaken.

Let me tell you exactly what happened.

Yesterday I clicked to restart my computer and it said updating windows, don't restart or turn off your system.

It was on 1 of 9 and it sat there for a while but eventually I noticed it was on 3 of 9.. then it didn't go any farther and I figured I'd just let it sit there..

Eventually though the monitor went black and wouldn't do anything. After a bit it got shut down due to a power blink.

When I went to turn it back on it went to the screen that says "Starting windows". Usually that little colorful windows logo would pull up but it wouldn't get past that point.

When trying to repair it says "loading files" or whatever and fills the bar and just sits there infinitely.

When pulling up safe mode it stops at "disc.sys"

So I tried putting in the Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit install disc and boot from it goes through the loading files and after that goes to the starting windows screen and stops.

I also have a laptop on the same so I created a recovery disc on it and it does the same thing with this.

I don't know what to do now.. If I can't pull up the install disc at all, what other options are there?

Thanks for any suggestions, I am up for trying almost anything!

I really don't want to wipe the hard drive and start with a fresh install, so I am hoping to have to do it without doing that.

I am downloading ubuntu right now so that I can at least get the last of the files that are not backed up already in case there is no other way.. but this is also assuming that a wipe would even work..

I did some memory tests, they are all fine.

Unfortunately my partitions must be screwed up because my HD isn't corrupt and ubuntu isn't loading.

I had an issue exactly like this last year, it was my video card drivers.

this one stops at disc.sys which is also a driver..

Is there any way just to replace the drivers somehow?

Disc.sys is a driver for your hard drive - have you run the hard drive diagnostics that I suggested?

The HD is a western digital caviar blue 640g

I downloaded the "Diag504fCD.iso" from the site, but it wouldn't run a diagnostic.

I figured "Acronis True Image WD Edition" would be what I needed, but it is an exe file, so I don't know how that would properly run on a CD since it isn't an iso.

I don't want to sound dumb, but if it is a hd driver, am I at risk of losing the files? As far as I can tell it is just a driver issue and the files are there, but I am of course concerned.

The fact that ubuntu won't load, I am assuming is because of a partition issue. I had to rebuild about a year ago when I was running vista and my video card driver crashed.. so I had installed ubuntu and installed windows7 over it, so that makes sense that the partitions would all be screwed.

Is there anyway to reinstall the drivers?

Oh, I should have posted a reply so as not to waste your time

I purchased an identical HD and will do a swap and install windows as it was on it. I have purchased an enclosure for the one that is in there and will transfer the files that way. I will then wipe the drive so that if this happens again I will have it there.

Thank you for all your help! I just felt this was less of a risk then accidentally wiping my drive and losing my files.

btw, it wasn't the Hard Drive. I mounted a new one and the same issue persisted so now I need to figure out why it isn't booting up.. I don't know if something got disconnected or died in it...
