When I installed Win7 over Vista, Malwarebytes whined that it needed to update. Fine, do your update. It then complains that I must first install a couple of security updates and opens my browser to the Malwarebytes page discussing this. I download the two files from Microsoft (KB4474419 and KB 4490628) but when I try to install them each tells me it is not applicable to my system (I have the proper, x86, files). How do I get these miscreants to play together?

(In a singular bit of lunacy Malwarebytes said the legacy version of their program could be installed without those updates, but when I download that Kaspersky blocks it as a trojan; now even if I temporarily disable Kaspersky I cannot run that installer.)

Thanks, the update install was just a couple of days ago (following online instructions, never did an update install before, usually just format and do clean install), no restore points yet. When tried win7 update got the 80072EFE error.

I wouldn't call it a "repair" install; system was Vista Home Premium x86, installed Win7 Ultimate x86 over it.

You cannot do an upgrade install from Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.
You would have to do a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.

How exactly did you install Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit?
Was Service Pack 1(SP1) included or installed afterwards?

FYI

To go up or down editions of windows 7 should the need arise:

Change the EditionID and ProductName in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion to the edition you want to change to. Then do the repair/upgrade install.

There is a much quicker way to go up editions of win7 ( but not down):

Use anytime upgrade. It will claim to fail - presumably because it can no longer validate the key online at the expected time. However it goes ahead and completes the edition upgrade on restart, then needs key putting in again to activate.

I have done it a few times.

I'm surprised an upgrade install from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate can be done.
I stand corrected.

How exactly did you install Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit?

Having never done an upgrade install before I read several online articles to, hopefully, make sure i did it correctly. (For thirty years I've heard never install one OS over another, wipe the drive and install clean; yet Micro$oft does it all the time, how many have done win7 to 8, or 8 to 10, now 10 to 11, from an online update. MS just shoots the files down the wire and installs without wiping out the old OS.) So I used Macrium to backup Vista, removed the old D drive recovery partition, expanded the C drive into that, restarted, put the Win7 disk in the drive and ran setup; after the language and license screens select "upgrade" instead of "custom", and about three hours later after the last restart I now have a Win7 system. So far it is working fine, I just have to see what updates I can do and tweak everything to my tastes.

FWIW I did it this way because there was too much registered software on the Vista system I could not easily replace, but some programs, notably java programming, were being problematic; and it was increasingly difficult to get compatible AV and browsers.

Run winver to find out if your system is SP1.
If not, install SP1

That shows "Microsoft Windows Version 6.1 (Build 7600) Copyright 2009".

So guess I need SP1, and anything else. (The last time i used this disk was to put Win7 on this laptop four years ago, and everything was still available for MS update.)

I ran the Simplex downloader referenced above, but no idea where it put the file (nothing on desktop or in any download folder), tried running it again but nothing happens.

Simplix wont work without sp1.

You could install sp1 manually first

OR, you can place the sp1 file next to simplix updatepack. Then when you run the update pack it should find the sp1 file and install that as well. Could take quite a while to do all that.

It is possible to install SP1 automatically if it is not already installed on the system. Place the files Windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe / Windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe in the same directory as updatepack7r2.

Not worth the effort for originaljgf current situation, but for anybody else who already has fully updated installation media which includes sp1, it is possible to do a repair install on non sp1 system.

It involves adjusting the sources\cversion.ini
[HostBuild]
MinClient=7601.0
MinServer=7601.0

to
[HostBuild]
MinClient=7600.0
MinServer=7600.0

I know this works because I have done it

There is a workaround for upgrading vista homeprem to win7 pro.
Do the usual upgrade/repair install from vista homeprem to win 7 homeprem.
Then use anytime upgrade to go from win7 homeprem to win7 pro , which only takes a couple of minutes.
But you need a win7 pro key obviously.

To continue; I have SP1 and KB3138612. Do I install in that order? Is there any prerequisite before SP1? After these will the Simplex download cover everything I need at this point?

We post simultaneously, lol. Thanks for the input.

I havent tried using simplix to install sp1 on a running system - Aleks says you can. But I am not sure if he assumes the non sp1 system is already up to date.

Try it and find out. It will be done in stages with reboots

Well, no luck installing SP1.

An hour installing and configuring only to end up with: "Failure configuring services pack. Reverting changes."

Another hour and back to desktop with: "Installation was not successful. Unspecified error." but at the bottom of that window: "Error: E_FAIL (0x80004005)"
