Hi all,
when i plug my nokia n82 cell phone using my usb cable (selecting data transfer on the phone), the "safely remove..." icon DOES appear on my taskbar...

but when i select "safely remove bla bla bla", it says "now u can remove hardware" yada yada yada...
I remove the phone from usb cable and then a message appears on the phone "data may be lost" or something...

BUT, when i go to my computer, right click on phone icon, and click "eject", the phone displays a message "now u can remove phone...."
and no message is displayed afterward saying data loss....
why is this?
thanks
:)

Don't knwo the answer but I can further define the problem ...

Even after uninstalling Nokia Suite I still get Nokia N8-00 appearing at the top of the safely remove message in my Win 7 Ult laptop. I guess it's in the registry somewhere but can't find it ...

USB devices come in all shapes and sizes now-a-days, not just printers, cameras and thumb drives.

If you look at Devices and Printers or Computer - you might see different USB types (Storage device, portable device, hub, etc)
USB.org - Defined 1.0 Class Codes
Base Class | Descriptor Usage | Description
00h | Device | Use class information in the Interface Descriptors
01h | Interface | Audio
02h | Both | Communications and CDC Control
03h | Interface | HID (Human Interface Device)
05h | Interface | Physical
06h | Interface | Image
07h | Interface | Printer
08h | Interface | Mass Storage
09h | Device | Hub
0Ah | Interface | CDC-Data
0Bh | Interface | Smart Card
0Dh | Interface | Content Security

DCh | Both | Diagnostic Device
E0h | Interface | Wireless Controller
EFh | Both | Miscellaneous
FEh | Interface | Application Specific
FFh | Both | Vendor Specific
It depends on how the mfgr defines the device and there might be multiple instances (printers have card readers, phones/cameras have sd cards)

Essentially, eject removes the media... safely remove and eject removes the device and the media. It's not exactly clear why one method works where the other doesn't, but I've had devices that were "busy" the first time I tried to safely remove, and on the 2nd attempt everything was fine. This is most likely normal behavoir where Windows begins to safely remove and eject media, but has not completely done so - the 2nd safley remove simply gave Windows the chance to complete the operation. Or.... it needed a kick in the arse.

I think you did the correct thing by trying the eject. The only other choices if Windows complains about a device are:
  • ignore Windows and pull the plug (not recommeneded)
  • shut down Windows and then physically disconnect the device.

Thanks very much for your quick replies. In response, I can say ...

  1. Tried sfc and chkdsk but unfortunately no help this time.
  2. In Devices and Printers there's an icon for 'Nokia N8-00' but the Delete option is then greyed out in the File menu.
Looks like the uninstall of the Nokia Suite partially failed. Maybe if I can get rid of 'Nokia N8-00' registering as a device, it'll stop running interference in the 'safely remove hardware message'.

I've attached my Droid Motorola Droid Razr Max a it still show in Devices and Printer too. It may be so Windows can reconnect easier, quicker next time I, or you, reconnect the phone.

However mine doesn't appear in the Safely remove dialog.
