Hey y'all-

Just built a PC, and long after troubleshooting everything else I still haven't been able to iron out this one. My PC hangs during the "shutting down" screen, and I can see that my mouse and keyboard are off, yet my processor, fans, and mobo are still on. After a good 5-10 minutes, the PC just restarts itself and ends up back in login. I've looked everywhere for a potential fix, and though tons of other people have had this problem, I haven't found very many people who were able to find a working solution. My roommate isn't sure either, and I would rather not have to do a complete reinstall of windows 7 as everything else is running smoothly.

The system:

Windows 7 Professional 64bit
CPU: Intel 4770k
Mobo: Gigabyte 787X-UD3H
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16Gb
Graphics: MSI Gaming Geforce GTX 760
Sound: Focusrite Scarlett 2i4

I should note that Windows 7 and all of my drivers as far as I can tell are up to date, and I can't tell if there is a particular one holding everything up. I've removed any excess programs with Revo and cleaned up with CCleaner. I've even defragged my HDD and have scanned not only with AVG but with Hitman, so no viruses or malware. I have yet to try this hotfix (You cannot make a computer that is running Windows 7 shut down or sleep) as its been said that this has already been applied in an update, and its stated that it shouldn't be installed unless absolutely needed.

Thanks for looking- and I appreciate any help I can get- I'm at a complete loss on what to do!

Hi digitalnative21, Welcome to SF. I had this issue with my PC. Please see if this can help you.

First thing I did, uninstalled 7-zip. This solved the issue of hanged Windows.
Second, I uninstalled Sticky notes. Removed the gadget from desktop and tried to shutdown the PC and it worked perfect!!

Try and let us know.

Thanks for welcome and for getting back to me!

I did have IZ Arc installed instead of 7-zip, but I uninstalled it anyway and it didn't seem to work... I also don't use the sticky note gadget at all. :(

I hit up my local pc repair shop and they didn't have any idea either- he suggested making sure the voltage is adequate for the system (specifically the memory), but I've got a 750 watt so I wouldn't think that would be a problem...

I'm going to give that hotfix a shot and get back to y'all with how it goes- a lot of people seem to have had this problem and just as many have had different solutions.

I'm just going to go ahead and reinstall windows. I think it has something to do with a Gigabyte app "Smart Timelock" or another, so I'm going to be very selective about what I install this time around.

It is mostly some application that leads to this issue. Before you re install Win 7. Uninstall all these apps and check if the issue persist.

digitalnative,

did you have a solution? Was it gone after new installation of Win7?

I have exactly the same problem, but I'm sure it is the focurite Scarlett 2i4. After I installed it on my machine, the problem with freezing shutdown began. When I diconnect the Scarlett and use the internal audio card or another one on USB, the shutdown freezing is gone.

So did you find a solution on your configuration with the Scarlett 2i4 installed?

Thank you for your answer!

Best Regards
Johannes

Dear gregrocker,

thank you for trying to help.

This USB2 Audio Interface has no additional hardware besides the drivers.

There are known problems with audio interface companies having trouble with the new USB 3 structure on Win 7 64bit machines.

My old one from Native Instruments worked flawlessly under Win XP, but produced clicks and crackles with windows applications like youtube, flash videos, media player after i bought a new machine with W7 64 pro this spring. There are threads for this problem on the Native forum, which are more than 1 or 2 years long until now, and there is still no definite solution, except changing to another brand USB audio interface.

I did this with the Focusrite Scarlett. Clicks and crackles under windows are gone now, but with the compromise, that I have freezing shutdowns regularly now.

I think that the development of drivers, be it the drivers of the audio interfaces or the drivers for the motherboard chipsets concerning the USB 3.0 structure is always behind the time.

BR Johannes

Make sure you have a perfect install as compiled in tutorial in my sig pic below. This is always crucial.

Thanks gregrocker,

my machine is a custom built one with silent tower enclosure, SSD and passive graphic card for making music, with only Win7 os installed by myself and only the programms I really need.
It was set up in march because of the end of Win XP support, with no unneeded trash on it.
