can't disconnect etc

I had to do a hard reset to my Linksys WAG354G router today and now, although it is working reasonably well when I open the Network and Sharing Center it shows just 'Internet' instead of my network name. Also, When I click on my connection in the system tray all I see is 'currently connected to Network Internet access above the dividing line. There is no mention of my network below the line so I cannot disconnect and reconnect.

Also, when I click on my network name and open the general tab, it says that ipv6 connectivity - no connection. When I do a diagnose Windows says it can't find a problem.

I'm also having problems in that when I do a broadbandspeedtest on the connection download is fine but upload always fails, which is probably why I can't get to some websites. This happens on all speed tests I do.

Firstly the fact you have no IPv6 connectivity isn't a problem it's just a statement. it just means you only have IPv4 connectivity which is what most ISPs offer at the moment (but that's going to change soon).

Secondly, have you restarted your computer since you reset the router? If you haven't it's definitely worth doing and may fix the problem.

Thirdly are you connected by Ethernet or WiFi?

Lastly, why did you have to reset the ruter?

Hopefully with these answered we can fix this problem.

Ah, I see, chasing my tail again! I assumed it was a fault.

Yes, I've done several restarts. It took an age and two page refreshes to get to see your response so it is painfully slow, also sending my posts to this thread.

An act of desperation really, the connection had been getting slower and slower and then the router lost the internet lamp completely so no connection at all. It was like that this morning, so it had been out for about 11 hours.

My desktop is on an ethernet cable and my laptop has ethernet and wireless, that is also very slow.

The speed tests show a very good download speed of between 5 to 6000 (which is max according to BT) but upload fails every time or just sits there for ever.

I tried to get onto the Linksys support pages but kept failing to load the pages.

Just out of interest if you've been with BT for more than 2 years (and plan on staying with them) it's probably in your interest to get a new BT option 3 package (which is what I did). They then give you a BT Homehub which as home routers go isn't as bad as you might think as well as many other goodies.

When you say between 5 and 6000 do you mean 5000-6000Kbps? I just wanted to clarify that.

Another thing that may work is if you unplug your router from the mains, count to 20 and plug it back in.

You may also want to try doing a soft reset (using the button on the router) if your router has that ability.

If all else fails try using the 'Reset to factory settings' button on the back which you have to press using a cocktail stick.

I'm with Orange, worse luck, and all they tell me is we don't support 3rd party routers. The reason I bought the Linksys was because when Orange sent me their Livebox I couldn't get it to work after an hour on the phone so I told them to go and multiply! It's been fine for 4 years anyway. I don't even know if the router is setup wrong or not, I have a feeling that my phone is the problem. I went to pingtest.com and it said I had 96% packet loss,line quality F (worst), Jitter 177ms, that was from Milton Keynes yet when I did the test from Dublin packet loss was 8%, jitter was 25ms but the line quality was still F.

Speedtest.bbmax said Latency test error trying to read latency file. Speedtest.net said 'upload test error trying to read upload file', broadbandspeedtester just doesn't do anything on upload. speedtester.com 'an error occurred while testing, connection error' and so on! They all point to upload failure and I don't know what that means, how it works and what I can do.

Sorry, yes. Between 5000 and 6000Kbps. I've done the power cycle on the router many times which made no difference when I wasn't getting an internet light and I thought doing a hard reset is the same as back to factory defaults?

While I was failing to get an internet light on the router the Linksys was saying 'Interface down@ in the status, now it is up. I have the option on the router to do a hard or soft reset.

If I could persuade my wife, it is her Orange account, to move to another ISP, I would, but she is worried about all her email addresses and contact she would have to alter. I'm gradually moving across to Fastmail, but if we have a faulty line that isn't relevant.

If you think it's a genuine line fault contact BT and ask them to check it out (they're obliged to for free if you can prove something's wrong I think).

I would also ring Orange again and ask for the router settings not 'how to set a router up' just for router settings.

While you're at it you may want to ask about changing providers but keeping email addresses. I'm not entirely sure what Orange's policy on this is but it's worth asking. If you have phones on Orange too you might be able to keep them.

If they don't/won't give you the router settings try looking for them online.

Such as Orange Settings - Advanced Settings from OrangeProblems.co.uk (which I don't think is very helpful though ).

If you need any help setting up the router just ask.

If you still have your old Orange router it may be worth trying to use that and seeing whether or not it is the router or a line fault.

If you need any more help, clarification or explanation just ask.

I rang Orange again this morning and before I had even spoken to anyone a recorded message was apologizing for the problems in my area! Can they tell what area I'm in then? Anyway, told the Indian guy about packet loss, no upload at all, had to repeat all this about 4 times then he eventually admitted there was a problem in my dial code area. Hooray! He said by 13.30 today all would be well. At 16.15 I checked again and I had upload, no packet loss and Speedtest.net said A for performance. It is fluctuating a lot now but I expect it to settle down in 24 hours. Just tested and it is back to F ping 439ms, but no packet loss.

Because of this, I think the router is probably OK. I did have the settings written down but that was 4 years ago so I wasn't sure. They were also on the CD, I found.

I returned the Orange router 4 years ago anyway.

Thanks for your help oli, just that when Orange keep telling me there are no problems then I believed them! Don't you just hate it when companies lie to you?

I don't trust or use conventional Tech Support for this reason.

I'm glad we found the cause of the problem, hopefully your Internet will be back to normal by tomorrow.
