Can't join Homegroup

Digger I hope you can advise me on this.

Okay I'm trying to network my computer with Win 7 RC x64 on it with my roomates Vista x32 system. The win 7 system is the one I set up the home network on and I have a printer on it and a folder on one of my HD I want to let him use for storage.

Anyway I have all the sharing option enabled as best I can tell and I set the printer to share as "Win7 HP" and the folder I want him to use marked as share to everyone and granted everyone full access rights but the printer and folder dont seem to show on his computer. I went to his network section and I see my computer (name-pc) but when I click on it I get a pop up asking for a user name and PW.

I've tried to follow all the info in this thread but am actually getting more confused going back and forth between posts trying to figure this out. With my old setup I kept a Vista x64 partition and he was at least able to send stuff to my printer without needing to log in.

Please help me as I really don't want to have to create a Vista x64 partition just so he can access the printer.

In short, if he enters a user/pass thats being used on teh 7 machine, he will then "login" to your 7 pc and see the shares, most likely. You can toggle around with network and sharing center / advanced sharing / Use user/pass to manage shares or allow Homegroup to manage... this should get you across the finish line.

Humm, well I set up my Win7 with my user name but no pw so should he be able to log in using just my admin user name or do I need to create an account for him?

YAY <Gives self pat on the head> I went to that advanced section you mentioned and noticed there was actually a scroll bar on the side so I had missed seeing some options. One was a setting where you could turn off needing acct/pw. Turned that option on and viola could access the drives and the printer without having to do any sort of logging in. Then I just had to download the matching printer driver for vista to the one I have to use in Win7 and printing worked too. Thanks for pointing me to the advanced network settings.

right, but this means that anyone that joins that network has access to your shares and pc without the need to enter anything at all. If you just create a password on your account, this could be a forseeable security problem or a nag, depending on how one wants to see it as. After you setup a password and he enters the information, he can save that information for next time use. Not sure, but vista may have a credential manager like 7, there it holds the "Cert" to allow that pc to "auto login" to the pc/shares in the future.

Humm, well this is a simple home setup of just our 2 computers so I hadn't really worried about it much. I suppose I could setup a pw but I figured since no one else has access to the network we would be okay.

Can't join homegroup

Ok, I´ve tried all suggestions prior in this thread, but with no luck.
I just can't join my homegroup. I´ve got 3 computers with win 7, two 64-bits and one portable with 32-bits.
I get the following error in my log: GetSharingFlags failed. Details: ???
I´ve tried everything, please help me.

Hello. Im new here. Just installed 7 today, and I've getting alot of help here.

Regarding homegroup, have you maked sure that the computers time and date are synchronized exatcly?

That did it for me, although I still have trouble accessing files.

I'm having no luck getting HomeGroup to work running a Win7 Vbox guest under Win7. The two machines are joined but when I click on Homegroup in Explorer it says there are no computers in the HG.

Finally got both systems seeing each others homegroup but unfortunately they found no files in any of the folders.

Hi guys,

Just to share, I had the same problem of not being able to join. I realized that my laptop and PC had the same computer name, and changed it to make both unique.

Solved! from "Create..." to "Join..".

Hi all,
i'm new here, and following you since last months ...
I have a trange problem.
I have 3 pcs, two of them have windows 7 32 bit, and the third 64 bit, all of them RTM.
I have successfully created a homegroup on one of them, wrote down the password to the other 2 installation, and everything works flawlessly.
BUT if i shutdown one of the pcs, it does not rejointo the homegroup automatically ( it only connects to the network, and can see the other two pcs ad all shares correctly ).
this happens on the 3 pcs, when i shut them down.
if i run the troubleshooter, it finds that
the network is not set to 'home', the 'peer' something service is not active, and the homegroup must be refreshed.
i click to solve the problem, and it works again.
i don't like to run the troubleshooter EACH time to be able to rejoin to the homegroup.
Any solution for me ?

and then, still asking myself : the REAL advantages of using homegroup instead of old sharing on the network ?

yesterday i tested again,
it seems that i have to set the network type to home EACH time a pc restarts.
I have the same problem on the 3 PCs.
when i set the network to home, the homegroup immediately appears.
is there a way to do this automatically on system start ?

if i run the troubleshooter, it finds that
the network is not set to 'home', the 'peer' something service is not active, and the homegroup must be refreshed.

Can you change it so that service is set to start and not to automatic or not running? Does that help?

How long have you waited before you repaired the net, does it eventually fix itself after 12 mins or so?

Do you use static IPs or a DHPC server? If it is the server, is the IP the same all the time? Try switching to "get IP automatically" and have the router be a DHCP server.

- i have done such modifications to the three services involved ( those starting with "peer" ), now they start automatically.
no change...
- if i wait, nothing happens, the homegroup is not found automatically, i have to troubleshoot and it works immediately ( i have to do it on the 3 PCs );
- i did not try dhcp, my pcs have 192.168.178.x ... ( 178 because the fritzbox router has this address built-in ).
i will try dhcp this evening.

Just a heads up.

I got it to work after some initial problems.
But I found it to be totally useless for my needs.

Once you share folders in the homegroup, anyone in that homegroup can see them, write and edit them.

I have folders I want my family to see/read, but not edit or write anything in it.
The only way that one could enforce restrictions seems to be using the users live or hotmail accounts which is a rediculous concept.
Plus I couldn't get that to work.

So I am back to good old advanced sharing + ntfs security + user permissions.

I had an issue that was solved by letting the router assign the IP, once assigned, I changed to static again using the assigned IP.

Also what is the name of the service that that is set to start, but that apparently does not start. (I would make sure it is set to start and not to automatic)

Did you disable anything in the NIC TCIP properties? (like IPv6 which is needed for home I believe)

i will try to enalbe dhcp and then revert back to static addresses;
there are 3 services starting with "peer", i put them "autmatic", do i have to set to "start" ?
i didn't touch other settings then ipv4 address.

- manual;
- stopped.

Solution to all my problems

i simply activated DHCP, thank you all for your advices ...
now i can see also the router's web page ( fritzbox ) i wasn't able to see before.
BUT, if i would like to fix the ip for my PCs ?
do you think it's possible ?
at the end the network was working fine, i had just the little problem that the homegroup was not recognized after boot ( i had to troubleshoot before ), and that the router's webpage wasn't reachable with http://fritz.box, but with its ip ( 192.168.178.1 ).
When i set the DHCP, the network IMMEDIATELY set itself to "HOME".
????
