Can't move "note pad" files to desk topo folder.

I mostly use my computer for photography. I keep a folder on my desk top where I store photos that I have printed.

I also write adjustments I have made to the photos in "note pad" but find that I cannot move these files to the folder in which I want to keep them. Nothing I have tried works. Drag and drop doesn't work. Nor does using control+C and control+V.

Could it be possible that the thing I have done in win 95, 98, and XP can't be done in win 7? WTF?

Where do you save them initially?

See what LockHunter tells you abut the file you are trying to move. It may be in use or locked ad LockHunter (or a similar program can free the lock).

All those methods should work, and a couple of others as well.

Looks like you have some sort of access problem. Where are you trying to save them ?

The following is not offered as a solution to your problem, ( although it might work), but you might find it more conveneint in future when everything is working again:

This a great free utility and saves a lot of clicking, dragging and what have you. You can set up the targets you want and a right click sends whatever you click on to that target immediately.

So, back to your problem, Can you give us some more info?

I right clicked on the folder and it seems that all the permissions have the allowed box checked.

I can move "word pad" files anywhere I wish. It's just the "note pad" files that won't go where I want them. Some times they will go the "documents" library. But that is not where I want them.

In case you are wondering why I don't just use "word pad" instead of note pad it's because "word pad makes me go through an irritating process to open a file. "Note Pad" opens right away.

That is normal, "Select all" only selects all the text in the file you have open, it will not select multiple files.



When you choose "save" the file has no default location as such and a "Save As" box is opened. You then have to navigate to wherever you want to save the file, give it a name, and save it.

You can make a shortcut;

%windir%\notepad.exe path to file

Which will open notepad automatically at that location.

This is why a lot of people use Notepad replacements! There are lots of these, but this is a very good free one;

You might not need alll the "bells and whistles" but you don't have to use them. The program is easy to use but still very powerful.

You can not specify a general default target in notepad, it opens wherever you happen to be in the file heirarchy. It also saves to the location in which you opened it, unless you press "Save As", which will allow you to navigate to another folder and save the file there. It's rather complex to explain.

If you open notepad in the path "Documents" ( or whatever), it will save any file you edit there back to where it was opened from. In order to change that you have to use "Save as " in order to specify a different target.

If you open notepad from a command line in the start menu, or from your "Programs" folder, it has no default target, and if you press "Save" it will automatically default to "Save as" requiring you to specify a target.

Notepad.txt can be saved to the desktop. You should be able to move them to any folder you want to.

Also, you can not move files using notepad, you need a file manager to do that. Explorer is the default file manager in Windows 7, and controls the desktop environment.

Double click on the folder that you want to save it in, when you've gone through the 'save as' process you described. Then you should get the 'save' option

The save box defaults to "Save As", because you did not open the file from or at any specified location, it is a new file, and in order to save it you have to specify a target.

No, it doesn't matter in this case. Ignore the "No items match your search", go to the file name box at the bottom of the window and type in your file name. When you use "save as" you must specify a target.

Ok, let me do a complete step by step for you.

This is what happens when you click on a target in the folder pane, in this case "Docs", and choose a filename in the entry box;



If you now click on "save" to the right of the entry box, the file will be saved to "docs".

If you want to move that file somewhere else, then you can simply copy it, or drag it or do whatever you want with it, WITHOUT opening notepad.

You CAN NOT USE NOTEPAD TO MOVE FILES!

If you click on a file that exists, notepad opens it, and when you are finished editing it, and click "Save", notepad saves the edited file back to where it came from.

If you want to save an edited file to some other directory, then you need to use "Save As", and specify a target.
