Can't replace Aero.msstyle

Can't get custom theme to work (see post #17)

Hey.
Don't get me wrong, I did take Ownership of the file but Windows still doesn't want to replace the file. "I need a special permission".

I've download the black Win7 Basic theme and I wanted to try it out but... I can't find a way to replace the file. Help?

It'll be because the default Aero theme is in use.


Going off the presumption it has identical filenames:
Download another theme first with a different filename to place next to Aero's files,
then switch to the new temp theme and log-off or restart to free up the Aero msstyle (they stay loaded in the memory).

Once restarted, replace the original Aero files.. (Do a backup though incase Aero Black is broken in anyway so you can revert!).


The Ideal way is to leave Aero intact and add themes as extra ones though. It should be a totally seperate theme, name & file wise. I don't know how windows will react if Black is broken & there's no default Aero in working order!!!

I've downloaded and installed MrGrim's Digital Pack and I still can't replace it :\

Already did a backup.

Also, the Aero.msstyle is suppose to only change the ugly Basic Theme's grey to black.

instead of replacing it, just copy the Aero folder and call it AeroBlack or something. delete the aero.msstyles file in there, and replace it with the one you downloaded. then make a custom .theme file that points to the new .msstyles file.

just open up an existing .theme file in notepad and you'll see what i'm talking about.

it's a much less intrusive option since you don't have to replace any system files to apply the new style...

The Digital pack is only a themepack and is only meant to give you some wallpapers, a few icons and change your Aero colour, as far as I know it has nothing to do with Aero.msstyle.

I have had some luck changing the Aero.msstyle by switching to classic and then you should be able to do your modifications and when you have finnished editing just apply it and it should work.

I installed that Ux Style Core thingy. If it's not that, where do I install the files? I already have them.

Forgot about that detail.

If your trying to change a visual style , you need to place the extracted folder in :

D:\Windows\Resources\Themes ( obviously change the drive letter if needed )

i've not tried that new patcher. i've used his old pre-patched files (they go in /windows/system32) which work fine, and now i run AveStyler for its GUI (it costs a few euros).

it took me a while to get a hacked aero.msstyles file running with the old manual method. not sure how it finally worked. it's too bad you can't just double-click on .msstyles files to apply them like you could in XP...

Here's what you do:

1) Switch to one of the high contrast themes, or Windows Classic
2) Take ownership of the Aero file, then click ok until all of the properties windows are closed
3) Give yourself Read & Edit permissions and all of that stuff...
4) Do whatever you want with the file

OK... in summary.

1. Took Ownership
2. Can't give myself any privilege other than Read, Execute and Show content of folder.
3. UAC doesn't do anything about it.
4. Can't replace any of the uxtheme patched files.
5. Still can't replace the Aero.msstyle
6. Tried in Safe Mode

I've tried everything now... help.

I think step one is where you went wrong, if you have taken ownership then you should have no problems getting full read and write controls.

First, right click Aero.msstyle and select properties.

Go to the security Tab and select advanced.

Go to the Owner Tab and select Edit.

Select Administrator(your user name) and hit OK and OK again.

Now you are on the security tab again, select Edit.

Select Administrator (your user name) and give yourself full control and Hit OK and OK again and your done.

You should now be able to move, edit or delete the file.

Thanks Mr Grim! It worked. The Take Ownership shortcut doesn't work then...

But, now, when I replaced my Aero.msstyle, after patching the uxtheme and tralala, gives me Windows Classic. I've restored my backup now. So, why can't I have Windows 7 basic's taskbar in black -_-

did you replace aero.msstyles with the new one? are you launching it via aero.theme? what happens, does it go to the classic theme? if so, either the msstyle is no good, or your theme files are not properly patched.

do any other themes work? try this one:
