Case Fans Continue To Run After Shutdown

I'm having a problem with one of my old computers and was wondering if anyone could take a guess as what could be causing it. This computer ran XP and several early builds of Windows 7 and Windows 7 home premium all smoothly but for the last few weeks the case fans will just keep running after shutdown. And I mean they will run all night if you let them, not just for a while to cool things down.

I'm not sure if this is even a windows problem or maybe more of a hardware problem. Could it be that maybe a power supply or motherboard may be going bad?

Thanks

are the fans connected directly to the mobo ,or through molex adaptors to the power supply? :)

Perhaps you could also try swapping a spare power supply with the one in your rig and see if the problem continues.

Hope this helps

The fans are connected through molex adapter's to the power supply. Unfortunately I don't have a spare power supply right now to try swapping it out.

somehow power is getting through the 12v supply line when switched off ,are you able to test using a multimeter? do you feel competent enough to remove the cover off the power supply and check inside ?:)

Shine,

I've had the exact same issue for about a month or two myself. Mine started after a power supply change, but hasn't stopped after replacing the power supply. I've heard that a program called "HWmonitor" could be the cause, I deleted it and no change. I have yet to find anyone that can solve this issue. I'm thinking it might be BIOS related, but not sure how to verify if it is.
