Changing the swap file

Hi all,

I would like to move the swap file from the hard drive its currently residing in to a 4 gb USB stick id like to install.

How would I do this and what would be the best size to make the swap file.

Also, is there any mileage in my doing this in Win7? It used to be a handy speed up for windows 2000 and XP but dont know about 7.

Putting the pagefile on a usb stick doesn't seem like a good idea to me as it is written to and read from frequently and usb sticks aren't designed to copy with that in a long term. Furthermore the usb stick is slower than your hd so I don't see any benefit of it performance wise either.

Hello,

I'm new to Windows 7 but having relocated swap- and paging files in earlier OS'es and even in Linux.

My system has a separate swap partition defined for Windows 7 and one for WinXP being on the same computer, but on different partitions.

The thread in your link was quite interesting, but had nothing to to with the original posting, because my main interest ist more or less the same question as the guy who asked for it in the early stage of your posting, namely, how to relocate the pagefile.

He didn't get the answer he was looking for.

OK, he now knows that a USB-stick is a bad choice, but he still doesn't know how to relocate and I neither, had to register to ask you experts to please answer the main question.

My main interest is what I have to do to relocate the pagefile, i.e., what config files I need to edit, how to become a admin user on my newly installed system and take the appropriate actions to get Windows 7 to look for it's pagefile on volume D: next time it boots or to creat the file there if it's missing.

In the main setup the options are very limited and setting up a pagefile is only possible on the very same drive.

Now please, I don't need a discussion on if it is useful or not, just what to do to have it done.

If it kills my system performance I'll see that and change back to earlier stage with default pagefile settings, more or less.

It's just that I want to give it a try. If it fails, I'll use the spare partition for something else like installing a new linux distro on the 5gb partition.

Thanks for any support you can give me. I do hope this thread is still being monitored.

The paging file is easy to configure - Control Panel > System applet > Advanced System Settings link > Advanced tab > Settings button (under "Performance" section", 1st Settings button) > Advanced tab > Change button. However, it is worth noting in passing that if you're moving the paging file to just a separate partition on the same physical disk that the Windows partition is installed to, you will at best get zero performance gain, and at worst actually see a performance decrease. However, test for yourself to see what works for you and your usage habits - one size does not fit all (although underlying paging file location and sizing guidelines for performance in general do not change).
