chkdsk usually runs after the computer restarts. Do what you did before, then restart your computer. If it doesn't work, there is a way to mark the drive as "dirty" via command prompt. If the drives dirty, Windows will insist on doing a full chkdsk test every time you restart the computer until you let it run and it passes.

Also, chkdsk said my old hard drive was fine (it was making loud noises, random files became unopenable, BSOD all over the place), but after running the diagnostic test from Fujitsu it said the the drive had bad sectors out the wing-wang and that the head was going bad. It also gave me an error code. I contacted Dell and told the guy the error code. He said he didn't even have to look it up. He immediately knew the drive was F'd. So I recommend using the diagnostics test from the hard drive manufacturer. If you can tell us the make and model of your hard drive (or at least the manufacturer) I will find the appropriate one for you.

Here you go: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

If chkdsk won't run after ticking both boxes on Tools tab of Properties for the target HD, then restarting, then try from Command Prompt in Win7 or the booted Win7 DVD Repair console or Repair CD: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html

Try also running sfc /scannow.

If these fail to fix it, the next best thing to clean reinstall is a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R
