One very popular program is CCleaner.

Be careful with the registry cleaners. Often times they do more harm than good.

CCleaner is excellent. I've been using it since it's inception, and have only had a positive experience with it. I don't know why anyone would have negative feelings about it. Perhaps they they misuse it. If you start using it, leave the default settings applied.

CCleaner does a very good job cleaning out junk.

Just don't use the reg cleaner part. Reg cleaners are unnecessary at best, harmful and dangerous at worst.

Hello Rmw020 Welcome to SF,

Its quiet hard to find any software without any negatives. CCleaner is great software. Also Glary Utilities is also a good one. But before you run it just create a Restore point in case your using any of the Registry Cleaners.

Hope this helps,
Captain

I use the registry cleaner on CCleaner constantly, and have never had any major issues with it. It will delete some icons every now and again, but if you made a registry backup beforehand, they can be recovered easily.

Just to clarify Jim's post a little. The free version does run on a 64-bit system, but it can't take advantage of the performance gains available to 64-bit systems.

For most people, the free one works fine.

I tried using CCleaner but it kept leaving files all over the place. I'm not sure if there is now a built in scanner to scan for left over files. Other than that CCleaner is pretty good and does it's job.

Thanks Jonathan,
I have used the 64bit version but didn't know the free 32bit worked on a 64bit OS. It didn't indicate that on the web site so I never tried it. Didn't want to screw the pooch with untried combinations.

CCleaner is in deed very popular. It makes cleaning of junk files easier and faster than Windows' own utility. It also comes in a portable build that you can extract to a USB and basically use to other computers without installation.

CCleaner - Builds

Just to complement you there Jonathan King, registry cleaners aren't all bad. I used CCleaner to fix a registry issue that was stopping me from saving images from websites to my computer. It also fixed issues when my desktop gadget was failing and stopping my computer from proper rebooting. The lesson about registry cleaners: just because its listed there does not mean it has to be fixed and always reserve a backup or a restore point. With proper and trained use, registry cleaners are somewhat beneficial but for totally inexperienced users, don't change anything in there unless you gain knowledge of how that must be done. I personally think that proper registry cleaning made my computer at least 10% faster.

Which is the best cleaning software for windows 7????????????

I am using Tuneup Utilities 2010 at the moment, i am not sure about the rest.

Hi, may I ask why you need to use a cleaner?
FYI - You may care to read the below observation re registry cleaners.
My advice would be to steer clear of these.

A guide for the average computer user for NOT using a registry cleaner follows -

IMO & to the best of my knowledge -
1.Windows is a closed source system, developers of registry cleaners are not working on definitive information, but rather empirical knowledge. Automatic cleaners will usually have to do some guesswork.
2. Modifying registry keys incorrectly can cause Windows instability, or make Windows unbootable.
3. No registry cleaner is completely safe and the potential is ever present to cause more problems than they claim to fix.

THEREFORE
4. If you do not have knowledge of the registry, then you would probably be better off leaving it alone, and definitely not placing blind trust in a program to do the job for you.
