Clipboard (Win 7) Automatically Clearing Before Paste

I do a lot of copy/pasting.
1) My normal practice is to copy something (e.g. Firefox Web Page, or something in a file in a different directory)
2) close the Application (Firefox) - or - that File
3) Open Windows Explorer and Browse to point of Paste
4) Right Click and Select Paste.

Since I moved to Windows_7 from XP, I find that the above method erases the Clipboard PRIOR to Paste so Paste shows gray.

However, if I remember to leave the Application or File Open from which I made the copy, Paste works correctly.

================
QUESTION:

1) Is this Normal for Windows_7 ?
2) Is there a Registry Tweak that will resolve this (Keep Clipboard contents even if App for File has been closed)?

Try it when booted to Safe Mode with Networking. If it works okay there then you have something installed that runs at boot time that is causing the problem.

Apologize for late followup. Having a lot of thunderstorms here so staying off computer.

Ztruker: WIll give it a test. But even if it works how do I pinpoint if something has Hooked or Subclassed whatever?

Slartybart:
Yes -- Have Office97 installed.

VinnyBuxton:
Ran SFC, No Errors.

Ztruker:
Did a clean boot and still had the problem. So coming to conclusion a Win7 issue. Hope yourself or someone can confirm.
To repeat, Open Firefox, copy some text from any web page, close Firefox, Open Notepad, and try and Paste what you copied. Paste is NOT available.

There might be a conflict with the Office clipboard and the Windows clipboard. I recall something about this a long time ago. Either limit the Office clipboard to one item or turn off Office Clipboard.

I haven't found any exact instructions (Office '97 is quite old - cool that it works though), so you'll have to poke around in Office preferences (or clipboard mgr might be a separate beast with options outside of prefs) and use the built-in Office help to find info.

Works okay for me. Opened Firefox, copied some stuff to the clipboard then closed Firefox.
Opened Word (2007) and pasted the data from the clipboard, worked fine.

As a test, try pasting into Notepad or Wordpad instead of Word, see if that works.

Slartybart: I'm most likely wrong, but both Windows and Office should be using the User32.dll Clipboard functions (that is for 32 bit).

ZTruker: Thanks for feedback. Had previously tried to Notepad and get same No copy results.
I shut off a lot of Services and Autoruns (mostly drivers) when I installed Win7, so may have created my own issue.
However, with a clean boot most of those should be non-functioning anyway. Will try and check on when User32 is loaded or called by the Kernel as Copy/Paste has been a CORE capability of Windows since the beginning of Windows.

I could be wrong too ;) Some of my information is mixed up between many releases.

At some point Office had an add-in for a special clipboard. It allowed a list of objects, not just one, to be held in it's clipboard.

It was a good idea if you wanted to copy a number of things and paste them into different files. You could paste the 1st and 4th copied text into 1 Word document, then you could paste the 2nd and 3rd copied text into a different document.

Sometimes, this special clipboard got hosed. By limiting it to one object, that cleared up the problem. You might be able to just empty the Office clipboard to see if that helps.

A quick test is to close all Office applications and see if the problem continues. I don't know if the special Office clipboard stays alive in the background or not. To be honest, I can't recall when the Office clipboard was introduced, so it might not even be on your system.

The article below doesn't list Office97, but take a look - it might explain better than I have.
See: Copy and paste multiple items by using the Office Clipboard - Word

Slartybart: Per the article link, the earliest office with a separate clipboard was Office 2007.
To my knowledge I've never used the Office clipboard, only the standard clipboard whose functions -- I believe -- are part of User32.dll.
XP has a separate clipboard viewer (clipbrd.exe in system32), but I've only used it once or twice.
It was deprecated in Windows 7.
Both (Office and Viewer) are Independent of my problem as it relates to the standard clipboard to the best of my knowledge.

That was one article... here's a MS kb referencing Office 2000
How to prevent the Office Clipboard toolbar from appearing when you use multiple Copy commands in any Office 2000 program

Searching is easy, finding is more difficult. ;)

Not to drag down your thread with a debate on when Office clipboard was introduced.
... I was saying is that I recalled an issue with Office and Windows clipboard. When Office clipboard got hosed, it hosed Windows clipboard. Now that I dug into the deep recesses of memory, it was a memory overrun.

It should be easy enough for you to test, if Office97 did in fact have the clipboard and you can find it, just turn it off. That's another thing I recall, the Office clipboard was buried in a sub -menu or two (but that's just my recollection)

Anyway, thanks for the memories ;)

That's all I had on this issue.

Good luck, please post the solution when you find it so other members might benefit.

Thanks,

Bill
