Computer does not boot up properly sometimes

Once in a while when I boot my computer it will either:

A. Stay on the bios screen for longer than usual. When it gets to the "Starting Windows" screen, it freezes.

B. The computer will not not boot up right away and the fans will spin up and red lights go on inside. After about 10 seconds or so, the computer will start but then freeze with a black screen after the "Starting Windows" finishes.

In both cases, the computer boots up normally after pressing the reset button on the case.
Sometimes I am greeted with a "Windows failed to start" screen where it gives choices to either repair or start normally. I always choose to start normally and it works fine.

Welcome to the Forum.

It can be a HDD issue.
Once under Windows, open a CMD window as administrator and type:
chkdsk c: /f
It will say the disk is in use and if you want to schedule to next start = Yes
Restart
Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks, bad clusters, bad sectors

Before doing a lot of HDD checking, ensure you have current data backups on external media -- in case HDD is on borrowed time.

Thank you for the replies.

I have had a different HDD before and it had the same problems, too.

It also seems to only do this during the September-December months, for some odd reason.

I really do not want to check the disk as when I did this once before it froze and I had to replace it and reinstall Windows.

I do not want to go through that again.

I do not have the extra money to replace the hdd right now nor do I have a dvd drive or know where the Windows dvd is.

I do have my files backed up on an external drive. Is there a way to completely back up Windows as it is, so if ever need to I can just
put the Windows on another hdd and have it boot up as if nothing ever happened?

Hi ChipChoco,
What you are wanting to do is a full disk image, i.e. all the information on the drive, minus the free space.
We recommend AOMEI Backupper
or Macrium Reflect Free
AOMEI Backupper Pro 5.3
Install & Register with one or the other key :
AMPR-75K4Z-7X8VL-0Z32L
AMPR-T8T3G-R9539-VXTZ2

A disk check doesn't harm a disk. It only corrects logical problems and list hardware problems (bad blocks, bad clusters, bad sectors)
If you did a disk check and your disk died, it wasn't due to disk check. It was already on the way.

If you don't do a check disk on your current disk, you may loose some or all your data.
