Ok, I'm not sure where to post this, so here it is....

Normally I used to right click on Computer and Choose Manage and do what I needed to do. Now, in Windows 7 Prof x64, I get a message to "Register Context Menu Platinum" and it counts down from what ever number and then I go to the web site for this program..(http://www.contextmenu.net/register_windows_explorer_shell_context_menu.html)

Any one else have this issue? of know of a fix? I can get around it if I go to:
control panel/administrative tools/computer Management.....

Hi Homeuser66,

Context Menu is a 3rd party app and it appears to be installed. I see two choices register it or remove it from add/remove programs.

But like Capt.Jack Sparrow, I'm curious if you 'have' installed this?

I'm not quite sure how that got in there

But you could use ShellExView v1.45 or Gary Utilities to remove it

Hope that helps

Hi and welcome. Its a 3rd party app. if you use it register it, if not uninstall it. Just to be safe I would also run a full AV sweep

Zizzag, I tried to register it, no place to register it,only buy it...which leads me to believe it's spyware or malware and not sure how it got there. I ran Kaspersky and Microsoft Securities Essentials and nothing was found..

Capt. Jack, I'm going to try your programs you suggested. Worse case I will have to format again, which takes all of 5 seconds....lol...and reinstall, 20 min.....Just the hastle of putting all my stuff back in....but I'll let you know...

Please go through the Tutorial before running ShellExView

Disable/Enable Shell Extensions

The ShellExView utility allows you to disable and enable the shell extensions components on your system. In order to disable or enable a shell extension item, select the desired item, and from the File menu (or from the pop-up menu) select the appropriate option - "Enable Selected Items" or "Disable Selected Items".
Here's 2 examples of useful things that you can do with this feature:

  • Context Menu: Some applications, like WinZip, CuteFTP, and others, add some items to the context menu when you right-click on a file in explorer window. If you disable the appropriate shell extension, you won't get these additional menu items.
In order to locate the desired shell extension item:
    1. Sort the extensions list by the "Type" column and look at all "Context Menu" items.
    2. Search the application that creates the menu you want to disable. The icon near each item can help to locate the desired shell extension.
  • Shell Folder: When you enter into some special folders like "History" and "Temporary Internet Files", you don't see the real file system, but the a virtual folder that the shell extension create for you. If you want to watch the real file system inside "History" or "Temporary Internet Files", you can disable the appropriate shell extension items.

I've got this ****e on my system somehow too and I have absolutely no idea how it got on here, I am very careful about what I install on my computer. I first noticed this junk when right clicking on windows media player this morning to jump start one of my play lists. I've not used it for a few weeks but it used to work fine, now I get this irritating pop up asking me to register and you cant close the window for 80 seconds and you cant minimise it either. Very bloody irritating.

I've noticed that right clicking on my computer and selecting manage bring this pop up up as well

I found it!!!!!!!
Although I turned off ALL Microsoft Updates and I was only manually updating one at a time restarting each time, as I was troubleshooting an IE8 lagg issue posted here in the forums. Well, it turns out Microsoft installed 3 updates with out me allowing it. They installed:

2 x Windows Update-critical update and
1 x Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributal.

I did a system restore point to before these installs and everything is working like a charm again! ....Go figure......Now I will pinpoint which one it exactly was.....

Thanks for everyone's help!!!!

Well I think i've fixed it with shexview.exe, this particular item just has a ? for its name I disabled it and Manage and Windows Media Player 12 both work the same as normal now. It's still worrying though as I have no idea why it got that way in the first place.

Glad that your issue is fixed :D

Extension " ? " doesn't actually give much information. .NET framework it kind of generic because Context Menu is adding to ASP.NET Controls. So i guess you don't have to worry about it because if it important i don't think the Extension name would be " ? "

The worry may be over already, I think I've figured out what program pissed about with my computer. If you look at the picture above you will see the date the CLSID was changed, I looked through the install dates of my programs and found one program installed that day that could be a probable cause, in this case it was some junk called 'balesio FILEminimizer' that came free with Nero 9 that I purchased on the same day. Anyway I removed it and after refreshing shexview.exe the ? had disappeared, hopefully that's sorted it out.

Thanks for the help Jack

Thanks to all for your replies, I had the same issue and was able to solve it: I also received the FileMinimizer Suite because I purchased an upgrade to Nero 9 and initially thought it could be useful... However, I could not find the extension using ShellExView. But after having a closer look to the folder that contains FileMinimizer, I noticed the following two files:
- FILEMShell.exe
- ShellMenu.ext
and decided to rename their extension to .NOTEXE.

After re-starting the system, the problem was solved and FileMinimizer still seems to work. I'll probably de-install it anyway however, because I don't like that kind of "marketing" at all...
