Hello everyone,

I have a computer that is acting as a server on my home LAN. It has a lot of drives and serves media to my other computers as well as stores some back up stuff. It has been having unexpected shut downs and I need to start to trouble shoot why. It never gives me a BSOD, however I only connect to it via TightVNC. I have created a zip file of the SF diagnostic tool.

Can someone take a look at the dump files? I can get more info, but I just need to know what to give you to help crack why it is doing this.

Thanks
-S

I concur, do you have any temperature monitoring software installed ?
Have you look into the event viewer ?

Very hot CPU can cause unexpected shutdown.
You need to sleep, hibernate or shutdown your computer for a while to cool the CPU temperature.

Thanks everyone for the help with my problem so far. Can you suggest temp monitoring software? I currently have speed fan installed (did this after you all mentioned high temps), but the fans on the rig are controlled by my mother board (CPU-stock, 1 case fan 200 mm, 2 case fans 120mm in a COOLER MASTER HAF 912 RC-912-KKN1 Black SECC/ ABS Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case) using the ASUS AI Suite to control the fans.

Except for the OS drive (a SSD) all the drives are green drives and are run pretty slow and cool. They shut down often. I suspect that since this happens intermittently, I will need to run something to log the temps.

Questions:
1) Should I use a different software to control my fans?
2) If I can use Speed fan to monitor the temps, can someone point me to a place that shows how to set up this monitoring functions so I can build a log of temps over the next few weeks and when the crashes happen?

Thanks again
-S

Until someone comes along who can decipher the dmp files have you checked for an overheating issue? Perhaps dust is clogging vents or slowing down fans. Or perhaps the PSU is failing.

How to Diagnose and Replace a Failed PC Power Supply: 17 steps

Thanks for this link. The PSU is only about 18 months old if that so while it could be the problem, I hope it is something else. I think that I'll give this link a shot after I log the temps of my computer and if those looks normal then maybe check out the PSU.

I forgot to mention that this machine is a little tricky to work with as it does not have a keyboard or display as I just use VNCTight to work with it. Just something to mention about my setup.

OK while I wait for someone who can read the Dump files, I have figured out how to get speedfan to log my temps and fan speeds. Will wait for a restart event now. I have speedfan set to start with windows (shortcut in startup folder) so it should also show when a restart happens because the log file will stop and start up.
