Context Menu - Add Shortcuts with Icons

How to Add Shortcuts to Context Menu with Icons in Windows 7​

   Note

To add items to the context menu refer to Mr Grim's context menu shortcuts tutorial or download context menu tweaker.

After adding shortcuts follow the steps given below to add icons to the shortcuts:
1. Open regedit. (open startmenu enter 'regedit' in search and hit enter)

2. Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\ in the registry.

3. Click on shell to see the context menu items.

4. If you have added firefox u will see firefox inside the shell key.

5. Click on firefox and the in the values pane right click and click 'new' and then 'expandable string value'. Name the new value 'Icon'.



6. Right Click on 'Icon' and click modify and in the edit string dialog enter the path of the icon file.(the file must have .ico extension)

7. Click on OK and you're done.

   Tip

TO MAKE THIS ITEM VISIBLE ONLY ON "SHIFT + RIGHT CLICK"
1. Follow steps 1-4 above.
2. Click on firefox and the in the values pane right click and click 'new' and then 'String Value'. Name the new value 'Extended'.

Here are some icons for anyone who wants to put them into a folder so they can be added to the Context menu.



To make it easier, you can add the above folder to the windows directory and use this registry tweak to automate adding the context menu shortcuts and pictures which will will look like this.

you don't have it because it is an example i used. You have to find your own icons through windows or find them on the internet.

u can edit watever images u hav in paint n save them as watever.ico

Now my context menu show Firefox icon Thanks for help, if i click that icon Firefox not open this error came (Look screen shot) .

I think this tutorial miss adding command options to the registry. For example if we click that context menu shot cut we can't open that program so then that process will be useless so i decided to add that information in here. Don't angry with me!

Follow these screen shots after you create short cut!



1st

Create sub key naming it as a "command" ("C" should be lower case).


After create it you can see this way.




2nd
Copy short path including its .exe file name







Modify command key bubble click it and Past its path. Like this way.




After that you can see it this way.




You done it!
Now you can launch your favorite program clicking context menu shortcut!

Hi there, I don't have any entries in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\ but I have changed ones in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\ and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\. I have one for MediaInfo lite in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\. It shows the context menu entry for all filetypes, as it should, but it shows the icon only for certain filetypes. Why would this be? Cheers.

What size icon is best displayed in the context menu? My guess would be 16x16?

Correct. The context menu would only need a small size icon.

Interesting. I guess now there should be a Shell Add-In just in case too like the handy Tweak Send To Toys or CuteMenus for example.
