Hi! Im Sparow, Just found this forum through Google.
I have a pretty big problem regarding my Explorer, it keeps crashing when I browse through my music or photo's, video's or whatever that basically needs or shows a thumbnail I guess. It's pretty annoying cause it happens over and over again! I've tried a command (sfc) scan and virusscans, as well as i've booted with Clean Boot, Safe-Mode and did a System Restore.
Nothing seems to work.

My specs are
Windows 7 x64 ( Home Edition )
3GB RAM
320 GB HDD
Build-in Video Card

The reliabilityreport tells me this:
Description
Stopped working
Path to application: C:\Windows\explorer.exe

I've got the dump logs uploaded in the attachment for extra information!
Would be more then happy if someone on this forum could help me solve it! :D

Thanks in advance,
Regards Sparow

No DMP file included in upload. Try this method.

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:
* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:
* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

Thanks for the answer ZigZag, enabled it, wasn't enabled properly and there's no Minidump folder.
Restarting now!

Enabled, Restarted twice and made the crash happen on purpose, still nothing such as /Minidump in the windows folder.

By the way, i'm not getting any BSOD Crash. The explorer.exe is just giving the "Stopped Working"
error, but even when the error occurs I can still browse while the error is showing and explorer is restarting.

How many times did you run sfc /scannow? What were the results? It sometimes takes three times to resolve all problems if there are errors.

You probably have a bad codec installed, it's fairly common.

You can do a couple things.

Uninstall ALL codec packages that you have installed and then install Sharkey's codec pack instead. (Search this web site for info)

Or you can turn off thumbnails for explorer and it may stop crashing...

If you do get a mini dump looked at it may specifically point out which codec is doing it, but if not, this is probably the most likely place to start stabbing in the dark :)

One before and one about 2 weeks back, but that should be in the log. I'll run one more.
I've tried ShellEx and such but no results either.

I've got the K-lite pack installed for quiet a while now,
should remove that?

Did this problem JUST start happening? Can you think of anything you installed closer to when the problem happened?

Otherwise you can try waiting to get a good mini dump and try to trace it to a specific codec, but short of that, uninstalling any and all codec packs is the most likely thing to do.

Actually uninstall k lite and see if the problem goes away (reboot in between). Just to verify if that was it or not...

If so, then give Sharky's a try...

Thanks again for the reply fseal,
I've uninstalled K-lite and rebooted, tried to browse but it crashed again.
Now i've installed and set up both 32 and 64 bits codecs from Sharky007,
which still didn't solve the problems.

The problem is actualy going on for quite some months now.

Is there a way to crash to bluescreen safely, to get a minidump at all?
Or any other solutions you can think of?

You could let us take a look over your administrative logs for application and system errors. To do so, please follow these steps:
  1. Click Start Menu
  2. Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
  3. Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
  4. Expand Custom Views
  5. Click Administrative Events
  6. Right click Administrative Events
  7. Save all Events in Custom View As...
  8. Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
  9. Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
  10. Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
  11. Upload the .zip file here.

I've found this small explanation on how to do it,
any harm when doing it? Don't think so since it's custom and could be changed back, right?
But what part will it crash exactly and will the minidump show anything of my problem?

Yeah, someone told me to do it once, and it didn't work for me either. Guess that explains why. Go ahead and try the registry fix. I would create a restore point first, though.

I've just upgraded to Windows Ultimate so I will check if the hotfix works.
The explorer still continues to crash.

Edit:
Which still says it's not for my OS Version. Oh well needed Ultimate anyways.
Going to try the registry now.

Lol. Seems to have bad luck only.

My Scroll Lock key is the same as Num lock, which needs me to have the Fn key pressed.
Thus making the combo not working..
