Continuing BSODs

I have a weird problem here. I'm getting repeated BSODs for no apparent reason. As I make regular disk images of my boot partition, I'm able to revert my machine to a known good condition. Once so reverted, there are no BSODs for a while until I make--apparently--ANY kind of change to the system. For example, if I

• install a new program
• upgrade an existing program
• make minor changes to the registry

after a while the BSODs are back again. I can induce a BSOD by having the computer reboot and get to the login screen and then do nothing. The computer will then repeatedly bluescreen, boot to the login screen, bluescreen again, etc.

Try installing this hotfix: Stop error message when you run an application that transfers data by using the UDP protocol in Windows Server 2008 R2 or in Windows 7: "STOP 0x0000007F"

Hi Jonathan
Can a mere Brit from Bristol, UK, thank you there in Rednecksville (no kidding?) for putting me on to this hotfix, the installation of which has (fingers crossed, touch wood) saved my computing life? I was trying to get used to the near certainty I was going to have bluescreens for the rest of my life. I still think in a part of my mind that this is just a feint on the part of fate, and it's waiting until I've convinced myself the bluescreen days are over to throw me another, but that is hopefully a story that isn't going to happen. Thanks again and may you go on to save many more lives.

Thanks for the report, I hope the BSODs stop for good.

There is a bug in Windows 7 that caused that; hopefully it will be fixed in Service Pack 1, but until then, we just have to use the hotfix.

All's well that ends well

I spoke too early. In fact the BSODs stopped for about 24 hours, and then were back again, with the interesting difference that, with the hotfix installed, the machine actually stalled on the bluescreen and had to be manually restarted.

Your information that this was a bug in Windows 7, however, saved me from the reinstallation of the OS I was contemplating, which would only have served, at the cost of hours of effort on my part, to have reintroduced the situation I was hoping to escape from.

Instead, I headed over to Softpedia and downloaded a copy of SP1, the installation of which was not as exciting as promised - my computer did not restart many times, only once - but, fingers crossed, they do seem to have nailed the bug. Everything is rock steady.
