And it doesn't matter what I'm referring to, it's just another example of something else that needs to be saved.

No matter how cool you claim Windows new backup tool is (which I have ZERO interest in trying out) I guarantee it won't get every little nook and cranny I want it to.

You won't want to copy everything and try to restore it later if the system goes down with some virus! That would only reinfect the same on a clean copy of Windows.

Clearly, I *do* want to copy everything, or I wouldn't have started this thread. Please stop telling me what I don't want to do. I can handle viruses, I have been for the past 20 years. I don't need MS to start holding my hand and telling me what I can't do, with my own files, now.

Hmm well if you want everything, then use "Create a system image" in Backup and Restore control panel. This with save a bit for bit reproduction on the HDD which is stored in a VHD file. This file can then either be mount in Windows 7 natively or run it in Virtual PC if you like. But that will give you EVERYTHING and in an easy to manage file.

With 7 it's simply easy enough to see an entire system image created and later restored once a fresh installation goes on. You can also schedule a backup of everything you actually need without manually trying to copy every folder. There are also drive imaging programs which will simply the process as well.

When using the Windows Easy Transfer tool to try it out on the entire content of the present host OS drive being 7 and performing a fresh test install of 7 on another drive to run the restoration there every file, folder, and even wallpapers previously set on the host with DisplayFusion used for the dual monitor setup here appeared on the second test drive showing the tool automatically backed up and restored all user accessible files and settings on the test copy there.

You missed some of the previous post there. When going to use the Windows Easy Transfer tool try it with over 400gb of data and files some time. The compression was down to about 95-98gb before restoration on the fresh copy of 7.

I didn't miss anything, it's just not relevant to what I was asking. I'm not interested in "Windows Easy Transfer Tool" nor am I interested in the compression rates achieved by it. Maybe you missed that part of my post.

With that much data, you might want to consider robocopy next time. It's built in, multi-threaded, and devoid of some of the Explorer "chattiness" which is inherent in a shell copy.

Windows Explorer shell copies have NEVER been robust and become less so as each successive Windows version tightens up security. For example, CTRL-C / CTRL-V gives up the entire copy operation as soon as it finds a locked file.

Later version of Windows have a special service (Volume Shadow Copy) for reading locked files while maintaining file consistency (see under services). This is used, for example, to ensure a full backup of an in-use system volume with many open files.

And yes, you might well want the auto manufacturer to weld shut the hood if you lived in a bad enough 'hood. Now, what might the analogy to a computer system be...?
