Thanks - one last clarification I should have made in MSConfig, under the Boot tab, if you click "Advanced options", "Maximum memory" should be unchecked.

If you have more than one OS entry in the Boot tab, which I think you might, make sure you have selected the Win 7 boot entry before clicking "Advanced options" and determining the "Maximum memory" status which should be unchecked.

ive only got Win 7 on its something i built for a prject at school and threw this on iv loved it so much im buying ultimate when it released
Thank you all you have been very helpful but i think all i can really do is Cross my finges and hope this problem will eventually be rsolved beside its runsfine on 8Gb anyway.

If it's any consolation, I also had 12GB originally which was all usable, but I trimmed down to 6GB because it overclocks much better and I wasn't quite reaching use of the 12 or even 8 .

What speed are you running the memory at in the BIOS? For 12GB I imagine it must be around DDR3-1066 by default.

yeah about there ive been in my BIOS a lot recently so haha yeah it is not sure if i should overclock tho mate said my computer runs fine as is.

You are off track here in this case mate, bios reports 12gb in cmos the first boot, every other boot after shows 8gb and of that it is sus as too how well its working in this condition.

in the first instance my computer was blue screening and all sorts of bad stuff when installing the full 12gb, at first i thought i had a faulty DIMM, i had F3 bios which i updated to F8 (latest) so i was like sweet this will fix it but turns out they not ontop of it yet. I mean after all we are at Rev 1.0

Refer to thiis: i know it is gigabyte but it seems to ring true with most x58 boards in my experience

now you mention it during the first few days there were a lot of memory errors and BSOD's

I was not refering to your case, but to chirpysniper, and I did want to completely eliminate this possibility, so as to make an informed decision on his specific case, and not somebody elses. It's called the scientific approach .

As far as the X58 chipset I've had no problem seeing 12GB in my Asus, although I've trimmed it to 6GB so I can get much better OC .

My only BSODs have been while exploring the far reaches of overclocking so I'm a happy camper.

So it appears that Gigabyte might need to do some more updating in their BIOS. Hopefully they'll get it soon. My biggest problem is occasional burping in my USB keyboard & trackball, no doubt due to the OC but only occasionally annoying.

I was not refering to your case, but to chirpysniper, and I did want to completely eliminate this possibility, so as to make an informed decision on his specific case, and not somebody elses. It's called the scientific approach .

Thats pretty good, What memory are you running? Have you changed voltages? i saw further up this thread that someone said to run QPI at 1.65, thats way too high IMHO. I didnt invest in ram cooling, never really needed it before.

Also the x58 seems to run hot as a mofo, im not running water on this box and shes cooks along, I needed to added extra case fans to get the flow over the heatsinks better! NB was at 50 odd degreesC when idleing... scary

Overclocking a box is an interesting thing. Most of us who have done it, or continue to do it, realize that our boxes run well enough as is. But we simply cannot ignore the fact that it can run better and thus we keep trying to get there.

I've found that I'm somewhat modest in my attempts toward performance. So, when I recently got a new box and found that my CPU (Q9550) and my board (gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R) were both solid candidates for overclocking I started to experiment. I basically knew that I wanted to stay with stock cooling as I was extremely pleased with the noise levels or lack thereof from my PC. So, I took my 2.83Ghz to 3.20ghz by increasing the FSB speed to 400, dropping the multiplier from 8.5 to 8.0 and run with a 1:1 mem:fsb ratio. So, I'm happy to be overclocking and 100% stable, but I'm also happy to have an endpoint where I don't plan to travel any further.

I'm running QPI/DRAM @ 1.3725v, CPU @ 1.2625v, DRAM Bus @ 1.64v, CPU PLL @ 1.94v. DRAM timing is 8-8-8-22. I set CPU multiplier to 19x so I could get a DRAM speed of DDR3-1600 - I couldn't get DDR3-1800 long-term stable. I had no problem with BCLK = 204 stability-wise but had to back down to 200 so I could wake from sleep properly.

I'm using a Rosewill cooler that's going for $20 at Newegg currently - that thing is huge. I idle at 43-45c core temps, up to ~78c after a few minutes of 100% stress testing but remains there after an hour. Recovery back to idle temps takes only a few seconds. Lots of case stealth fans help .
