Solved Cpu fan not spinning properly

Hello!

I had a problem with my GPU fan.

Then I uninstalled Speedfan and now the CPU fan isn't spinning most of the time. When I start my computer it spins for a little while and then stops. Is it supposed to work like this? I haven't noticed that it stopped before the installation of Speedfan.

No, it's not supposed to work like that. The CPU fan should always spin.

How did you discover that it was not spinning?

I can see it.

When I checked CPU fan in BIOS, it was spinning (~1280 rpm). Also I installed Speedfan again, to see the CPU temp and it was ~35C.

Edit: The fan didn't start spinning when I installed Speedfan, because I didn't set up the proper settings.
Edit 2: Started watching a stream on Twitch and now the CPU temp is ~45C, and still not spinning.

Nope. I'm thinking that Speedfan screwed up the settings somehow. I'll restart and check BIOS again.

Edit: Now it didn't spin in BIOS either. I made a photo of the BIOS screen.

Do you mean the "CPU smart fan target"?

Edit: Turned that on at 40 and min. fan speed to 25%. No change. Still only spins for a sec.

Start at square 1 set the bios to defaults.

I reset the BIOS with the "Load optimized defaults" option (The other was "Load fail-safe defaults"). Nothing changed. Then I set my fan from "4 pin" to "3 pin" in BIOS. It was running at 900 rpm for a little while, but then stopped again.

I will restart and reset the BIOS again.

Edit: I reset the BIOS again, it was spinning just fine, then I opened Speedfan(to see the rpm, was around 1300 rpm) and it stopped again. So seems like Speedfan is messing with it somehow. I will uninstall it and reset the BIOS again to see what happens. I will give an update later today.

I think it`s garbage, and you don`t need it.

The bios and MB take care of your cpu fan speed just fine.

No good news. A few minutes after my last post I noticed that the fan had stopped again (had to go out so didn't have time to post). It ran fine until I started Mozilla and then it stopped.

That made me think if it's maybe my PSU. The PSU has been making a hissing sound (last time I heard that sound the voltage regulator(or something like that) in my PSU was busted and I my microphone got to much voltage and just gave out static noise). I noticed the hissing sound when I swapped the fan out for a new one. I'm thinking that maybe the fan can't get the correct voltage and that's why it's not spinning.

Tomorrow I'll get another PSU from a friend, so I can test. But it's weird, because the fan ran fine for about 2 minutes at ~1300 rpm. And everything else works fine. We'll see. If that doesn't help then I'm out of ideas. The MB should be fine since it's starts up, it must have a connection and temperature sensor is working nice I saw it in Speedfan.

I currently set my CPU fan to 3 pin at BIOS. Seems to be working. I'll leave it for now, so I don't harm the CPU. But tomorrow I'll swap out the PSU (though now I'm starting to think that's not the issue).

Sadly I could't get the other PSU today. But the fan is still working with the "3 pin" BIOS setting. So I'll leave it with that at the moment and mark it as solved. If I figure it out, I'll update.

Speedfan works great here and handles all my cooling fans within one process. I can set each fan to control rpm with as many temp thresholds as I choose. I run a small form factor case with primary cooling from a hybrid CPU fan/duct and no room to jam more fans in there other than opening the case and pointing a stand alone fan at it. My cpu fan runs @ 666 rpm, no change and bios is useless in that department. People squawked at the fan running full rpm and lenovo delivered :devil: by making it quiet. Speedfan may not work with every system out there but there are systems that benefit from speedfan. I can assert speedfan has saved my system from a meltdown.

Speedfan does requires some thought to set it up. At first run I had 2nd thoughts and tried to find something better - no joy. I gave it a second try and am now satisfied with it's function. Speedfan gives more granularity control. I can set it up to control all fans to work in concert with 9 temp inputs. It is pretty deep and the interface can be confusing the way all the variables interact. Once you understand the quirky interface it works great.

OK so lets recap and get a few things sorted out. You are having issues with the CPU fan. Not the GPU fan you mentioned on the first post. The fan has been replaced. The bios has been reset to defaults. It all seemed to work until once again you ran SpeedFan?
Ok what I would do in a case like this would be to uninstall Speedfan and once again reset the bios by removing the AC power and the CR2032 battery for 5 mins. Do not rush this part. CMOS does remember stuff when you wish it didn't. Plug your battery back in, apply AC mains power and set your clock and time and set up your functions the way you want them (Boot order etc) The CPU fan set it to 75% so it is not going too slow. Make sure if it is a 3 wire fan or 4 wire fan that is set correctly. The fan should now work. If not there are 3 possibilities. 1 The Fan is faulty, 2 The BIOS is corrupted 3 The fan driver hardware on the motherboard has died or is intermittent. If that is the case find somewhere else to plug in the fan (Case fan header hard drive cable with an adapter) and turn off the fan monitoring so you do not get the CPU fan stopped alert. If the fan has been replaced we should be able to rule that out. If you don't see any signs of corruption (wierd characters strange jumping of the cursor) tghe bios is most likely fine. If there are settings for the fans that include AUTO you could try that.
