Hey guys, I have a slightly older desktop that has an Pentium D "Presler" 925 at 3Ghz and wanted to upgrade it to a Core 2 Extreme "Conroe XE".

The computer's chipset is a Intel Q965 Express Chipset It runs with a max Rated FSB of 1066Mhz. The current Pentium D has TDP 95 Watts while the Conroe XE has a TDP of 75-80 Watts.

My only question is: Should I anticipate any problems in the upgrade? My only fearis the bios not supporting the CPU as this computer is an HP Compaq dc7700.

Any thoughts?

Edit:
What about the possibility of using a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700

Hello there, ionbasa!

Well, that architecture, despite being awesome and powerful, i'd say it's a little outdated, if you're upgrading using some parts (let's say: motherboard and ram) and if you can find a C2Q for a small amount of money, go for it...

Otherwise i'd suggest building a new rig.. with 500$ you can do wonders.. RAM is dirt cheap, you can find 16GB DDR3 1600 Corsair Vengeance LP for 77$, and a Core i5-2500k for 220$, a P67 or Z68 "basic" motherboard and you're good to go!

What's your budget? :)

Well budget wise up to about $700, but a local computer shop had a few of these CPUs on sale and thought about upgrading one of my PCs.

Well, if the price is good, go for it, but.. 700$ can get you a really good PC, you could just sell the one that you want to upgrade and buy a new one :p

P67/Z68 + i5-2500k + 16GB DDR3 1600MHz = awesomeness :D and you won't spend that much.. even though, if the sale price is good (the one you're telling me about) go for it... what do you have to lose? :p

Q965 chip set supports only old generation Core CPUs. there is no quad core support i think.
I think any core cpu is better than old netburst architectutre cpu.
netburst architeture in my opinion was not very good, thats why intel stopped its development. and focused on core.
new case+mobo+ram+cpu is best way to upgrade. any sandy bridge cpu will outdo Presler in most tasks (if money is an issue H61 mobo + I5 2400 is good choice)
otherwise you may search for cheap used Core 2 duo (like E6600)

Even if you went to the cheaper core i3 platform you'd see a massive performance leap even from the core2 family.
$700 is a decent budget to have! Treat yourself to a new pc! Your pentium D rig if you've had it from new has done you well :)
