Solved Dead Partition: Need Help Restoring or Deleting

No, this has nothing to do with my computer. It does, but it doesn't have anything to do with my Windows 7 system. Anyway, a while back, I made dual boot partition with Windows 10 Insider Preview and Windows 7. After I restored my system using the Acer disks, my dual boot configuration stopped working. I am assuming the Windows 10 partition is dead.

Below is the screenshot and to the right is the Windows 10 partition that is selected.

See if you can make it work with EasyBCD? Here is the tutorial https://neosmart.net/wiki/easybcd/dual-boot/bcd-based/ supports up to 8/8.1 perhaps W10 will work as well
If not, you can just format that partition I guess.

Hi do you still have the install media for win-10tp JJ ?
You can probably boot to it and use the startup repair,

If you intend on upgrading your 7 install with 10 I'd just format the partition and be done with it.
Right click the dead partition and click on Format. ntfs.
After that all the space on D will be available.

Install EasyBCD (click Download - no Name or Email required)
to Windows 7 to add Windows 10 (probably listed in the choice menu as Windows 8 instead). If this doesn't work then as stated you can boot the Windows 10 disk into Repair choice on second screen to run an Automatic Repair - same as Windows 8 Automatic Repair

if you don't want Windows 10 then post a screenshot of Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image and we'll help you remove it as long as it isn't marked System Active.

Okay. Thanks Greg. All in all, Windows 10 is okay, but I really don't see a difference in it than Windows 8. Does that change my mind about updating to Windows 10? No, it doesn't. I will update to it, to stay current.

Can someone show me how to delete that Windows 10 partition? I really don't see the need in it, since I am going to upgrade to Windows 10 when it gets here.

Go to the same place where you took the screen shot JJ,
Right click the D partition and click on Format.

You can also open disk management and do the same thing,
After that just right click it again and click on delete,
Delete will turn it into Unallocated space once that happens you can increase the size of the C partition to take up the entire area again.

which is required before we can safely advise you how to delete the other OS.

The correct way to delete an OS is to delete its partition in Disk Mgmt or using a boot disk.

Yep right click D partition and click on Format leave as default ntfs and agree that all items will be erased
At that point you can leave it as a D partition with nothing on it or right click it again and click on Delete
That will make it Unallocated space just like the 15.10gb in front of C partition,

After that it's up to you if you want to reclaim all of unallocated space now or later ?

Thrashzone, how do I reclaim all of the unallocated space?

You can reclaim the portion to the right of C by using Windows Disk Management.

You would need a third party tool such as Partition Wizard to reclaim the portion to the left of C.

Your C partition is only 20 percent occupied, so there's no over-riding reason to reclaim the space. You can just ignore it for now and reclaim it next month, next year, or never--whenever you need the space.

To the right you can easily use disk management but the 15gb to the left you'll need mini tool
Do you want to add space to system c drive partition or resize system partition? The partition magic MiniTool Partition Wizard is a good choice.

Okay. Sorry for the lack of knowledge. But, I really don't understand what you just sent me. If it had steps 1 by 1, then that may be a little easy for me.

For the portion to the right of C, after you have deleted D.

Go to Disk Management.

Click on C partition.

go to Action menu.

choose All tasks.

choose Extend Volume
