I just finished a reinstall, had winnowed all of the errors out and was doing the final clean and boot time defrag with Puran.

Afterwards I checked the Admin Event log again and had a bunch of Volmgr and Volsnap errors from the reboot:

Did a search and found an issue where System Restore turned off after a defrag with Perfect Disk which also does a boot-time scan: Volsnap - Shadow copies deleted every boot

I checked SysProtection and Restore was still Enabled for C but apportioned Disk Space had gone to zero.

Anyone else heard of this?

That's indeed not pleasant. Get a SSD (there are many cheap offerings right now) and then you need not do any defrags.

I have read where some 3rd party defrag programs will do those kinds of things.
Restore points and shadow copy are corrupted or unusable. Permissions get changed.
Their doesn't seem to be a exact patter of the problems that are caused.
See if you can do a defrag with Windows 7 built in defragger and maybe get lucky and it fixes things.

I'm thinking some of the 3rd party programs aren't keep up with Windows 7 and it's updates.

I got sold on Puran defragger when a 2 minute startup got traced to fragmented SYstem files, and Carl suggested a boot-time defrag. Puran cut the boot time in half. For several years I've used it without issue. I like the Disk Check it pairs with defrag, and the Intelligent Optimizer option moves most-used files and programs closer to the edge of the disk for faster reads.

However after five years being married to it I'm beginning to wonder if except in such special circumstances Win7 really needs it? I know they set a defragger to boot on schedule with every copy of Win7. CCleaner often finds gigs of schmutz to clean up which sells me on its continued use. But I'm leaving both of those off my new laptop to see if it really makes a difference.

Ccleaner and windows own defragmenter, that`s all you need.

Greg their are many great use to be programs but they just don't keep updated to work with Windows 7.
