I have not backed up my system for 2 years, last time it was brand new with vista, now I have win 7. This partition is taking up a couple of gigs of hard drive space. So is it OK for me to wipe this partition clean? Does it auto-save stuff on it?

If the recovery partition is for Vista then yes, you can go ahead and delete it.
Backing up regularly is strongly advised however!

I removed it from my wife's laptop for two reasons. First, we made the restore DVDs and put them in our home safe. Second, she just got her Windows 7 upgrade, so we don't need it anymore.
