Hi,

I have a Dell 1764 which I bought on ebay, it came with Win 7 Ultimate 32-Bit, and was experiencing occasional crashes, so I thought that maybe it needed a 64-Bit version of Win 7 as that is what the laptop originally come installed with. So I installed Win 7 Home Premium 64-Bit but after a while started to get BSODs or just sometimes a restart without the BSOD.

I have ran CHKDISK as well as the HDD test off Hirens Boot CD but no errors were found.

I have ran MemTest86+ for approx 11 hours (14 passes) but no memory errors were found either.

Yesterday I wiped and installed Vista Home Premium to see if it made any difference, which it did seem to for about 6 hours, but then the crashes started again. I am guessing the crashes may be linked to a Windows Update which was received but to give an idea, I've not received the SP1 update yet so its still early days in the update process.

Last night the crashes were coming thick and fast, sometimes barely getting far into boot (approx 5-10 seconds) before a BSOD would occur. I ran driver verifier on all the drivers that are not provided by microsoft and have attached the zipped dumpfiles. I'm presuming these are the correct ones as I'm not sure if the verifier dumps go to somewhere different to C:Windows\minidumps\

So last night I gave up and left it powered off over night, and this morning I started it up and it seems Ok. Not had a restart yet or BSOD and its been running for about 45 minutes. It does seem that the crashes happen after a period of the laptop being on for a while.

Anyway, I won't write anymore as I'm not sure what to write,so I'll wait for you guys if thats ok. I've seen some really supportive posts on here from you guys so really hoping you can help.

Thanks in advance

Gav

Hi Gav,

The first thing we should do is check that you haven't been sold a counterfeit Windows 7 installation - these are known to be one cause of BSOD's. Please do the following:

1. Download and save this tool to your desktop:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

2. Run the tool, and then click 'Copy' - ignore any errors if they appear

3. Use CTRL+V to paste the unedited results of the validation tool here in your next reply

I'm assuming this might be a Dell OEM installation. Also check to see whether there is a COA sticker attached to the computer. It will look similar to this:

View attachment 253951

If there is one attached, please quote the Windows 7 version (Professional, Ultimate etc.) but do NOT quote any of the numbers.

Regards,
Golden

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I have just reinstalled Win 7 from the disc that came with the laptop, which is apparantly the Dell OEM Disc, so at least we are starting with a fresh install now should any further BSOD occur.

There is no CoA on the bottom, but I extracted the Win 7 key prior to wiping the disk to do a fresh install. I thought that the CoA were coded into a chip on the motherboard nowadays as a security feature so just assumed that as the properties say activated that its genuine. Hope the results below confirm this.

Hi Gavin,

You need to install this update to Windows 7, then run a new MGADIAG report, and upload it here in your next reply please:

Description of the update for Windows Activation Technologies

Also, the key you extracted would have been for the 32 bit Ultimate, yet this MGADIAG is for a Home Premium. You cannot activate these two different versions using the same product key. Since there is no COA sticker, which product key did you use to activate this Home Premium installation?

Regards,
Golden

Hi,

Thanks for the prompt reply. When I reinstalled Win 7 64-Bit it never asked for the activation key so I just assumed that was because it code the code from the chip on the motherboard. After installation I checked in properties and it says activated so again assumed (I know what assuming does!!) that all was in order.

Here is the results of the MGADIAG report;

Thats good news.

So, I'm holding off installing the updates at the moment and when I do I will create a restore point each time incase its the updates which are causing the problem.

Would you recommend that I get the drivers from the Dell support site next and install those before going further ahead with the windows updates?

Or is there some other diagnositics that I could perform first?

Gavin

Hi,

I would perform all the Windows Updates first, including the SP1 update.

Regards,

Ok so now I've installed SP1 and then some updates following that.

What should I do now? Run verifier on none Microsoft provided drivers to see if I get a crash?

I've had the laptop running all day so far and almost 7 hours without a BSOD, then 3 within 10 minutes.

I've just installed HWiNFO64 and Speccy and this seems to increase the frequency of the crashes. I set HWiNFO64 to Sensors Only and switched the logging on, so I have included that in the .zip too.

Gavin

I think the crash frequency was coincidental as ive run HWiNFO64 and speccy again and didn't get a BSOD.

Take memtest. Run for 8 passes and test each stick in a know good slot for an additional 6 passes.
   Note
Pay close attention to part 3 of the tutorial in order to rule out the faulty stick out.

   Information
Errors are sometimes found after 8 passes.

   Tip
Do this test overnight, before going to bed.

If Memtest86+ does not find any errors with ram run Windows Memory Diagnostics for 7-8 passes following its tutorial:
Upload a screenshot of your hard disk using CrystalDiskInfo:

Make a hard drive test from the hard drive manufacturers website:
Run Disk Check on your hard disk for file system errors and bad sectors on it:
Hard drive test both short and long with:

I've ran a memtest86+ on the two sticks that are in and no errors found. Before I test the stick individually and the RAM slots I thought I'd do some of the HDD checks first.

I've attached the screenshot for the CrystalDiskInfo

I'll do the other HDD checks and then get back onto the RAM checks

That was 7 passes and the other night it was 10 passes without any errors.

I wanted to get onto the HDD tests during the day and I'll do somemore long RAM tests during the night.
