Dell latitude E6510 windows 7 battery not charging

I have a dell latitude E6510 which isn't charging the battery. BIOS says it's normal health, the FN+F2 combination to enable charing doesn't seem to work, and the BIOS says that the charging of the battery is enabled. Not sure what's going on here. Anyone else have this problem? It has an I7 processor in it if that helps, and since it's windows 7 I thought there might be a problem with that that someone here might be familiar with.

Machine is in good condition (from my mother), and I've unplugged it and taken the batter out and put it back in to see if that would take care if it, but nothing. No contacts look bad, and the machine runs with the power cord in it.

Any info and/or other recommendations would be appreciated.

The Dell Latitude E6510 laptop was introduced in 2010.
What's the exact 7-character service tag number on yours?
Does it have its original battery and power adapter?

As far as I know it's the original battery. But the BIOS say's it's healthy; it's just not charging, which means to me that for some reason it's able to be charged, but it isn't happening for some other reason. The battery was almost never used as far as I know; it was always plugged in.

The service tag number is FS76VM1

Recheck that service tag number to see if you read it incorrectly.
The one you submitted (FS76VM1) is "not found" at the Dell support site.

THIS is the default support site for the Dell Latitude E6510 laptop.
It lists several different battery models that come in it, so we don't know which one you have.

What is the exact Dell part number of the battery on yours?
Does it look like THIS or THIS?

So it isn't the serial number? Because that little white sticker says SERVICE TAG (S/N) FS76VM1.

Where else would the service tag number be if that isn't it?

And where would I find the part number for the battery?

Forget about the service tag number.
Please answer my 2 questions in post #4.

I went to the cmd prompt and got the serialnumber -- that's the correct one. So what could be going on here if the serialnumber/service tag isn't valid?

Where would I find the part number for the battery? All I see in the battery compartment is the Windows registration tag/id number
Where would the part number for the battery be?

And I can't tell if the battery photo you linked to is the same one on my computer. I think it looks the same, but I can't be sure.

Every laptop battery has a label on it with its description and technical specs.
If yours is a Dell-branded battery (which it probably is), it will have a Dell part number.
Amazon and Newegg (which I linked you to) have a replacement battery for your laptop.
Knowing the part number will help to confirm it's compatible.

Do you think it could be the power adapter? I noticed that when I jiggled the power cord into the computer the computer shut down (since the battery isn't charged). When the computer is off I just noticed that if I jiggle the power cord in its socket in the back of the computer, the power indicator light on the lower edge of the back of the screen (which also has a battery charger indicator next to it), flickers with a blue light. But if that's the case it's strange because the computer runs with the cord plugged in, but even then if I jiggle the cord a certain way the computer shuts off.

I'm not there to see your laptop or its power adapter.

It sounds like there may be an issue with the laptop's charging port or with the power adapter's connector.

If the battery is 7 years old and has never been used in the sense that it has been allowed to discharge and recharge but has only been charged all the time, then it can be so simple that the battery is only dead and needs to be replaced

I have such a laptop that shows that the battery is okay and charged, but when the power cable is removed, the computer dies.
I also have a laptop that indicates that it does not even charge. Both computers had dead batteries on but the charging function works in the computers, because with replacement batteries they worked again.

just a thought from me :-)

Does the laptop work without the external power supply?
If it doesn't, remove the battery and work with the external power supply. A failed battery can damage the internal power supply. Then replace the battery.
