I like Windows 7...EXCEPT...I am worn out with having to lengthen the detail every time I open Windows Explorer. How can I set it up so that the details are of a set length, the way it was in XP and all earlier versions? This is very annoying.

That is not the answer. I was asking about the length of the details. I was having to drag the detail to a "wider" dimension (longer) for one of the details. In this case it was for the file name. I may have stumbled on the answer, and it seems that it ends up being just as in xp. Go to "Tools>Folder Options>View", drag it to the length I want and then click the "Apply To All Folders" button. That seems to have done the trick.

Some days you're the dog, and some days you're the hydrant. I have been the hydrant with this issue despite doing this since before there was either the Apple or the PC. I really believe that the longer you are doing this the more you miss the simple answers as they whiz right in one ear and out the other.

It still beats the abacus (which has always had a really lousy gui).
