Downloading Trouble

Hi all.

I couldn't find any threads that cover my exact issue and I assume that this is the correct section of the board to post in... anyway, my issue is as follows:

IE8 won't allow me to download any programs. The download box pops up as normal and the progress bar goes to 100% but then it just closes and the download is nowhere to be seen. The search function won't find it either; the program is not on my computer.

The only bits of advice I've found online is to download Firefox (which would be great if it wasn't for the initial downloading problem) and also altering permissions in the Component Services bit (dcomcnfg), which did nothing.

I've also turned off Windows Firewall and am using Kaspersky 2011 with all permissions set so that it doesn't delete stuff automatically.

I also had an issue with uTorrent that I believe to be related: Whenever I clicked on a link to download a torrent, uTorrent wouldn't pick up on the fact that I was attempting to add a torrent to the download list. I was able to add a new torrent by inputting the URL but they would invariably fail.

(Foolishly, I had a bit of a tantrum and uninstalled uTorrent so as to install BitComet but then realised that I couldn't download that anyway. I blame quitting smoking.)

Any ideas?

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately it didn't work and I assume for the same reason as my downloads are failing.

My Adobe Creative Suite attempted an update this morning also and a couple of those failed (although most did actually work; perhaps due to Adobe's updater shielding the download from whatever problem is interrupting regular downloads).

Any further suggestions would be great.

Thanks again.

I've noticed that problem with some but not all downloads. Usually all I need to do is download again and answer "yes" to the question "Do you want to replace the existing file..." and it works. Some files won't download if you try to remame them before hand but they can still be renamed later in Windows Explorer.

Thanks for the response. This doesn't work though. At first it was only a problem with occasional downloads. Now it's every single one.

Bummer!

Have you tried right clicking on the file and choosing "Save target as..." Then navigate and save to a place on the hard drive you can find later. (Not sure, but temporary files may be hidden by default; I use "show hidden files" in the folder options/view tab.)

Again, thanks for taking the time to assist.

I've already tried this with no results.

Strange. That program does an ONLINE scan.

IE has security options that may be causing a problem or you may have a browser add-on problem. You could try a reset: Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Reset...

Well, thanks for all the suggestions folks.

The good news is that I solved the problem. The bad news is that I didn't manage to get IE8 to behave itself.

I ended up downloading Firefox and BitComet on a friend's computer and bringing it home on a memory stick.

A bit of lateral thinking did the trick. ;)

I'll be using this forum again and will suggest that my friends use it too. You've all been very helpful.

I'd still be concerned about IE8. May be indicative of other problems which have not yet presented themselves...like Windows Updates or certain websites that just work better in IE. Besides, we may all be switching to IE when IE9 comes out of Beta.
