DVD Drive doesnt read disks

Thought you said your dvd drive was 5yrs old! seems right up to date from your 'infotool' results!

Have you tried swapping ide 0 to ide 1 socket?

Up to date, maybe, but the hardware is 5 years old.

The IDE socket shouldnt matter, considering i can get the thing to work in XP... unless the drive is intentionally making me angry.

Win 7 insists on starting my monitor (8mnths old) @ 59Hz instead of 60Hz making the text appear smaller on screen!
Works perfect @ 60 hz on XP!

Have you tried shorting "cable select" for your DVD drive?
How about in Bios set as 'PIO' initially

Neo its probably the difference between xp and w7 to do with sizing (not between 59 and 60hz a tiny amount) - it does the same on mine - to fix you adjust the dpi settings - here is how - right click the desktop - click screen resolution - click - "make text and other items larger or smaller"

With mine I have a 1680x1050 with dpi settings of medium +125% there are 3 settings on the dpi page, and you can also customise the dpi settings to your liking - sometimes it throws a few lines out here and there eg. in wm11 some of the options barely fit the window or are partially obscured. But in general its great and 99% ok.

Well... as much as I hate to admit defeat... methinks it's time for a new drive. There appears to be some fundimental incompatibility between W7 and that drive.

Yeah, I'm beginning to think the same thing. Perhaps that's why the exact same drive I owned crapped out on me during a Windows 7 install.

Now, the OP is left with only a few options, as I see it:

1.) Keep this drive for a Windows XP rig, and get a new drive (preferably SATA).
2.) Try updating the firmware to see if that makes the drive compatible with Windows 7 (at the risk of rendering the drive useless).

It doesn't appear to be a driver, or software issue anymore. I do believe we have exausted that possibility. Perhaps trying to contact Pioneer might yield some results? I've never had any problems with their products until this model drive, and Windows 7 clashed. I'm still a BIG fan of Pioneer. My new ones work flawlessly, and are so quiet I can barely tell they are working when they are burning. So, if the OP decides to get another drive, I strongly recommend a Pioneer SATA if he has a spare SATA channel.

I "upgraded" from Windows XP last week, and ever since i installed it, my cd/dvd drive refuses to read any disks. I have tried at leas 5 different disks (2 DVDs, 3 CDs), and none of them work. All I hear is the drive spinning the disk (doesnt sound like it normally does) for about 10 minutes. It determines what disk it is, but fails to launch any programs off it.

I used this same drive last week when I had XP, and it worked fine. The drive only started having issues when i tried to install Windows 7, when the install screen had an error message telling me that I needed to install drivers... but thats another story (I ended up getting lucky and the CD worked for some reason).

I have not changed any connections in my computer for about 4 months, and that was to install my graphics card.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Latest firmware
CS or Master, still the same problem
Drive works in XP (duel booted)
When application from DVD tries to launch, error message "<DVD Drive> is not a valid Win32 application"
Takes about half an hour to read disk
Deleated and let windows re-install the drivers.

I noticed you havent tried to delete the upper and lower filters - firstly backup the registry, and save to the desktop - type regedit in search - select the result - in the window - up the top select file - select export - choose to desktop - give the file a name eg. rege bckup and click save. If it doesnt work click on the desktop file and its restored to the way it was before.

Ok next go here: Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs click fix( this if for vista, but it works with W7 also), or do it manually. Do try because ive read so many posts with this working, but its just another fix that works in some cases not others

You could also try some of the other fixes for w7 specifically listed on the page eg the troubleshooter.

I'm glad to see your still not out of ideas, whest. I would really like to see this guy get this issue resolved without having to spend any money on a new drive, or risk a firmware flash. Keep at it, Bro.

Thank you all for your help. I am attempting the registry fix as we speak, which could take an hour, but it looks like a new drive is in order.

Mad, I do agree that Pioneer seem to be a great company for drives. I have had no problem with my drive in its 5 year life up to now, so I am fairly sure my next one will be Pioneer.

Thank you whest for your support, info has been great. I tip my hat off to the both of you for your persistence. And the others who helped, thanks so much. I probably wouldve reverted to percussive maintenence if i knew i didnt have decent help.

He has this on his system - whats he do with it ? - C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\GEARAspiWDM.sys. This may be a problem if he does get a new drive - he could just follow the path and delete it - setup a restore point firstly - i think w7 keeps a shadow copy of all the system files and deleting it maybe a waste of time - im lost here - is anyone seeing this as a problem?

After looking thru his drivers I agree - it prob is the gear software.
On their website they only mention Vista too!

Microsoft drivers are dated 2006 because they are mainly to with chipset drivers (Im guessing your referring to these) this is because intel makes drivers for new chipsets all the time and they are all thrown in the one package, however, only the date changes - if your chipset is 4 years old when you download the latest chipset drivers, all microsoft is doing is dating them accordingly.
Note sometimes there are small changes and improvements, so its best you update to latest chipset drivers if your having any chipset related problems, but dont bother if your not.

The Matrix Storage Manager was installed right, however the INF update utility one gave me an error saying my computer didnt meet the requirements. Didnt get any positive outcomes, but it didnt ruin my computer, so yeah. Back to square one.

I didn’t know whether to post this or not, so I thought I would now, because there seems to be somthing wrong with your OS if the chipset drivers wont update and may cause a problem down the track if you need a new dvd drive.
Did you update the chipset drivers firstly if not this may have caused the problem - if you didnt you might be able to restore around it and update the chipset first then install the intel matrix driver.

Also just check to see if this is in device manager - i doubt it - a Marvell 88SE6102 PATA controller.

Go to downloads and select your OS - CHIPSET - intel info utility and download, and install after sytem restoring around the chipset drivers or the matrix driver which ever you installed firstly, and see if this will install - you might of had a corrupted download or something. If it won't I would recommend reinstalling the OS or a repair.

yeah, doesnt work Anyway, came up with a less-than-orthadox solution. Because my driver works on XP, I read the disk and turn it into an iso file on XP, then use the image on Windows 7.

Pity i will have to get a new driver...

I thought you meant a new drive. It's a real bummer when you have to spend cash, so I can definately relate.

However, check this out. This thread really struck a cord with me for some reason. So, I attempted to install a few REALLY old drives on Windows 7. Every one of them worked perfect, even an old CD-ROM drive dated at 1998. I'm thinking your drive took a dump.
