Error 80246002 when clicking 'chek for updates'

^^^ Never used Norton here (stock MSE & w7 firewall). Google dns and Opendns still works fine for doing the update checks. Have also been using those DNS' in w8 for some instances with IE11 not connecting anywhere.

Edit: now a zillion 80246002 posts on Windows - Microsoft Community, seems MS got lots to explain lol+

Am now using the isp default DNS, updating works fine, all back to normal. So whatever DNS related changes MS did seems to be propagating. Case closed (hopefully...).

Tested on another pc with the same update error, works fine with google dns, and also opendns 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220

Just added an SSD and loaded a fresh copy of WIn 7 Pro onto a laptop I bought and after installing 100+ updates, windows said there was a newer version of Windows Update so I installed it. After this, I checked and there were about 11 more updates and once I put them in, I rebooted and the next time I tried to check for updates I got the 80246002 error.

Found this thread (and this post in particular) and changed the DNS to the OpenDNS servers above and it worked fine after that. Not sure exactly what ever got me doing that but I usually manually add the OpenDNS servers to my machines (some issue was resolved years ago by doing this and I have used them ever since). Hope this helps some people out there.

I just got this error today and from all I've read about it online it sounds like a temporary DNS problem, that you might be able to workaround by using a VPN or changing DNS Servers.

Well it's 7 more days til Patch Tuesday so it's not that critical for now

This error is not actually a DNS one as far as I can make out - it could be solved simply by installing the oldest found update using the standalone installer.

That was fast! I've done absolutely nothing except waiting...... and now both automatic and manual checks for Windows Update is working again
