Solved Error Code 0xc004f063 on Dell Retail system after HD Upgrade

I have a Dell Studio XPS1495 that I bought from Best Buy about 3 years ago. A few weeks ago, I upgraded my Memory and hard drive setup to a SSD primary and a second data drive. Since the new primary drive was smaller than the original, no mirroring programs would work, nor would the Windows Recovery or Dell Recovery since they require the new drive to be the same size or bigger.

Also, There is NO windows COA sticker - it was either not there, or it came off. (Odd though, cuz the other Dell stickers are there and in good condition too) but it's a valid system that was all good. So, I got the product key from my original install using produkey, thinking that was 'the one'. So, I put in a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium, using the key that I got, and a downloaded ISO from microsoft (I forgot where, but they seem pretty easy to get) All good, but after a few weeks, I then got the activation errors, Error Code 0xc004f063 while trying to activate.

Through these forums, I learned that the Retail Key on the original install is a generic one or something and that the key that Produkey is also a generic one.

I've seen a few threads of some possible solutions, but one thing -I still have the Original Drive with the Original Install on it. I can easily pop that drive in and access the original, good install. Produkey won't work, obviously, but is there any other options - as seen here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/153626-product-key-number-windows-7-find-see.html I don't want to keep swapping drives unless there is a known solution.

Side question - is it known for a retail computer to NOT have a COA sticker? I never noticed, or needed it until now . . . 3 years after I bought it.

Okay, I feel silly. Probably one of the next links I clicked after posting this thread took me to a page that noted "Possibly under the battery compartment." and sure enough, there was the COA sticker. I've owned nothign but dells in the last 12-15 years and don't ever recall the sticker 'hidden' in there. Oh well, it worked.

- Dell didn't start putting the COA stickers in the battery compartment until Win7 came out (and they are almost the only company to take that option).

Yea, I was miffed . . more frustrated than anything since I've spent at least an hour or two's worth searching for solutions, reading, etc. I finally made a post here after no luck elsewhere then literally the next tutorial I read mentioned the battery compartment.

Question though - would I have been able find anything with my original install Hard Drive that I've kept in tact? Produkey returns the generic retail number, but is the real number buired in the original install somewhere?

No - the Product Key exists only on the COA sticker unless you enter it into the computer. Even Dell don't (shouldn't?) have a copy of it, and MS has no records of it until activation takes place (apart from knowing that it has being created).
