When I use the backup utility in the control panel, and try to restore an image, at the point where I hit restart, I get the message - windows cannot restart into recovery environment.

Has anyone ever seen this message (it's the first time I've seen it). Anyone have any ideas what may be causing it?

Hi brian, thanks. I am familiar with how to do backups and restores (at least the basics of disc image backup), I've done them many times but I can't figure out why in this case I'm getting this error now.

Hi, thanks for the info. I saw this article but what it refers to is trying to boot into repair from the manufacturer DVD. Where I actually get the error is within windows itself going through the restore system image wizard. When I click restart I get the error. Also, I didn't install from a manufacturer DVD, it's an OEM win7 home premium disk.

Don't see anything in event viewer related.

Thanks for the help. I think I am going with acronis true image home 2011....i just saw it on newegg for $4.99 after rebate! Unfortunately I can't trust the windows backup. It has always been reliable on my htpc, I don't know why it's not on my desktop.

Funny, many in the forums said Windows Backup & Restore, though limited, works reliably.

Personally, I use TI2011. Even though it's becoming more bloated, backup/restore has always worked flawlessly via the boot cd. If you can get it for so cheap, why not.

I should actually correct myself. I am a little concerned only because of this error message, BUT, it is possible to boot into recovery using the win7 install disk and do a restore (which I did and it works). For whatever reason, I get this error if I try to initiate the process through windows. So I wouldn't say the backup in itself is unreliable. Just seems like there is a bug (possibly) in the process in windows.

hi,

i have the same issue. But unfortunately i don't have the install win 7 disc so that's not an option. I created a system repair disc but it won't boot on it. And when i try to restore the system image (which i made on an external drive) through the regular system restore, it won't work because of this "windows cannot restart the computer into the Windows Recovery Environment.

So i'm seriously out of options here...any idea what i can do at this point?

any help MUCH appreciated...i've been struggling with this for weeks now.

Try downloading and burning an iso of the install image (perfectly legal according to the article since you need your key to use it). Then boot into the install and choose repair, then restore a system image.

Run cmd as administrator and use this command reagentc /enable
;)
that will enable Windows Recovery Environment
If you want to disable Windows RE use reagentc /disable
