Ethernet Connection Lost (and Found?)

I don't think it's a router or ISP problem. I've connected my router right to the wall and I had the same problem. I'm on a university connection so I doubt it has anything to do with them.

Hi all, I have a ASUS P5Nsli mobo & it's been running with both XP Pro x 32 & x64bit since I bought it 7-8 months ago. I just intalled Win 7 Ultimate x64 & it worked "out of the box" when I put in my ISP details into the onboard Marvell network controller. A few days later I bought a 1tb SATA HD & a 2gb ram stick, taking my system from 3gb to 5gb of ram. Installed both & reinstalled Win 7 on the new 1tb drive exactly as I did before, &, no network access. I went back to the first Win 7 install, as I haddn't removed it at that stage, & it no longer saw the network. I had no problems connecting under XP, so I knew the system worked.
After much checking & rechecking, emails to my ISP ove many days, in desperation, I removed the new 2gb ram stick. Both the Win 7 installs connected the the net with no issues at all. I've since found out, from Marvell, that the issue is that the P5NSLI board was released before Vista, & the nVidia chipset has some "compatabillity issues" with the network controller when there is any more than 3gb of ram. Apparently its unfixable.
Apparently it seems to be a hard wired problem, so no driver or firmware or bios ubdate will work.
Perhaps the P5NSLI is not the only mobo that has this problem since there dems to be a wide range of mobo's with connectivity issues. Just a thought.
Cheers all.

No scottyd, this info came via a reply from Marvell to another persons email on this issue. Here is the full reply from Marvell:-

"We did see this problem with this particular motherboard when using Vista 64-bit. The problem is with the Nvidia based chipset and we are not able to fix this problem. There are a few solutions:
1. Use Vista 32-bit
2. Use Vista 64-bit with 2GB of memory
3. Use Windows XP

Unfortunately this motherboard was released before Vista came out and it has some compatibility issues."

Windows 7 has most likely inherited this issue from Vista as I have no issues under XP 64-bit. The only differance is with solution #2. As I'm currently running 3gb of ram & I have no networking issues with Win 7 x64-bit.

Again, hope this helps.

I don't think that's the problem the rest of us are having, these seem to be windows 7 specific issues. I've just completed 24 hours of testing on a vista x64 install to verify that there are no issues there (i knew this before however after using vista x64 for over a year, i just wanted to make sure)

I've also ruled out Realtek or Intel or whatever network adapter as the cause, and i've ruled out the rest of my hardware with the Vista test - all signs point to this being a Windows 7 software/kernel issue. I will now think about somehow contacting microsoft about it, though i'm almost certain that will amount to nothing :zip:

 • Problem description: I have a very strange problem. My Internet connection drops randomly, and when I say randomly I mean it can drop 10 times a day or twice a week. The odd thing is if I'm signed in to my Yahoo Messenger when the connection drops, I remain signed in and I can send/receive instant messages with no lag or other problems. Same thing happens with downloads: If I start the download when I have Internet access it continues even if the connection "drops". Meanwhile, if I try to ping my gateway or a random site like google or yahoo, I get "request timed out". I'm unable to browse also. Nothing gets the connection back but waiting. The drop can last for a couple of minutes or several hours. While it's down, I sometime launch my browser and it loads the google homepage, but that's it. I also receive replies from my gateway. Just one or two and then request timed out. Ruled out the ISP problem, because on XP I didn't have this problem and my neighbors aren't experiencing any of my problems. I've tried every possible solution I found on this forum and others, but none worked: disabling rss, disabling IPv6, setting static IPs, disabling all offloads, no sign of the Bonjour service, disabled firewall and antivirus etc.

I think the network issue I'm having is that, as far as I can tell, only appears on the ASUS P5NSLI mobo under Vista & Windows 7 x64. So my problem may be both a chipset/bios issue, but only shows up under Vista or Win7.
The explanation from Marvell explains the problem I'm having, or rather had now that I've dropped down from 5gb to 3gb ram. (one guy posted somwhere that he had to drop from 8gb to 3gb ram to get his network adaptor working, now that would hurt).
It's entirely possible that a fix could come from M/soft either in a future update, or SP1. Given the age of the P5NSLI, my bios is the latest & it's dated 2007, it's unlikely either nvidia or ASUS will be bothered to release a fix. Regardless of there being one or not.
The only issue I have with the Marvell response is that running a 32 bit OS will only see 3gb of ram regardless of how much ram you have. So you may as well do as I've had to & just have 3gb ram, until she who must be obeyed, allows a new mobo. :o
BTW, I never bothered with Vista, so I've no idea if my system works with it & over 3gb ram. Although, as an experiment, I might borrow a mates copy & install temporarily to find out. If I do get around to doing that, I'll post my findings.

The only other thing I have to offer up, is a hunch. I don't have experties to test this, so feel free to either investigate it, or tell me it just can't happen.
Could it not be a conflict or an overlap with the way the memory is allocated to the devices on the PC during startup, that only happends in Win 7 x64 when more than 5gb ram is present?
i.e., Say a pci device is loaded & allocated a memory range first, then the on board network adtaptor tries to access the same or some of the same memory range, but can't.
From my limited knowlage of the way PC's & OS's do these things, it sound like there should be some sort of conflict warning. If that is the case, perhaps I've just answered my own question.

Just got my Intel EXPI9301CTBLK 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI-e network card today. Installed it, disabled 2 Marvell NICs in bios, (disabled ipv6 and power saving features for new card as well), started downloading and all was fine for a bit, then it disappeared just like the onboard Marvell adapters. Acted the exact same way. Nothing showing up in network tab of task mananger, system pretty much unresponsive, couldn't open any explorer windows or even click restart, so I had to hit the reset button.

This has to be something with Windows 7 itself and the (Intel) chipset I have. I don't know. Very frustrating

Sorry you didn't have any luck either but i wasn't surprised :(

With some advice i've been further troubleshooting, and even in Safe Mode i get the issue. The list of things i've ruled out as being a possible cause is growing. The fact that this issue occurs in safe mode, with only the core windows 7 services running, and on both Intel and Realtek NICs points to a very deep cause though i'm at a loss as to what it could be. I am going to try running utorrent in different compatibility modes, followed by flashing to my board's newest bios. I don't hold out hope for any of this to be helpful but i want to cover all bases.

A little help

Hi everyone. I've been using this post to try to find an answer to this problem, but the problem always reappeared. Then I went to talk with Microsoft, and the gave me a solution, that has worked fine for me. They say that it is one of the programs that runs on startup that is causing the disconnection. Follow this plan, and maybe you'll be helped:

Action Plan:

Step 1: Perform a clean boot

Note If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps. We strongly recommend that you do not use the System Configuration utility to modify the advanced boot options on the computer unless a Microsoft support engineer directs you to do this. Doing this may make the computer unusable.
a. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights. b. Click Start , type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue . c. On the General tab, click Selective Startup , and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.) d. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all .

Note Following this step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points. e. Click OK , and then click Restart . Step 2: Enable half of the services

a. Follow steps 1a and 1b to start the System Configuration utility. b. Click the Services tab, and then click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box. c. Click to select half of the check boxes in the Service list. d. Click OK , and then click Restart . Step 3: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Service list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Service list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one service is selected in the Service list, and you still experience the problem, the selected service causes the problem. Go to step 6. If no service causes this problem, go to step 4.
Step 4: Enable half of the Startup items

a. Perform a clean boot by repeating step 1. b. Click the Startup tab, and then click to select half of the check boxes in the Startup Item list. c. Click OK , and then click Restart . Step 5: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Startup Item list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Startup Item list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one startup item is selected in the Startup Item list, and you still experience the problem, the startup item that is selected in the list is the service that is causing the problem. Go to step 6.

If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.
Step 6: Resolve the problem

After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the System Configuration Utility, and then click to clear the check box for the problem item.
Step 7: Reset the computer to start as usual

After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:
a. Click Start , type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue . b. On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK . c. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart . How to start the Windows Installer service when system services are not loaded

If you run a Setup program without starting the Windows Installer service, you may receive the following error message:
The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. Contact your support personnel to verify that the windows Installer service is properly registered.
The Windows Installer service does not start if you clear the Load system services check box. To use the Windows Installer service when system services are not loaded, you must start the service manually. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start , right-click Computer , and then click Manage .

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue . 2. In the console tree, click Services and Applications , and then click Services . 3. In the details pane, right-click Windows Installer , and then click Start .
Please disable the anti virus and firewall settings if any

I've kept the pci-e Intel nic in and it just happened again. I tried changing my DNS servers, which had no effect. When the NIC disappears usually my memory usage spikes and I can't open any other explorer windows or even click restart. I though I would mess around a bit so I went into task manager, clicked users, right clicked on my account and clicked disconnect (log off would not work), it put me back at the login screen where I logged in again. After doing this my NIC reappeared in the networking tab and I could go online, yet my memory usage was still at 80-90%, event viewer failed to load giving me some error. This time I could actually restart without pressing the reset button on my computer.

After rebooting I looked in event viewer I found these:

Intel(R) Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter

I really don't know what to do here besides dropping the cash for a new motherboard / cpu. If anyone has any type of contacts at Microsoft please point them to this thread.

scottyd, I think you may have some third party application(s) that are causing a connection problem with the server. This driver works with Vista, but it's still 2 years old.
Download Intel Pro Network Connections Driver 11.2 Driver for Windows 2K / Windows XP - Softpedia

You might also want to 'wade' through this ... http://downloadmirror.intel.com/17891/eng/readme.txt
This happened with my built in Marvell network adapters also. It doesn't seem like a driver issue. You think that older driver might work even though it's not for Win 7? Right now I'm on the latest driver available.

Now THAT is an interesting bit of information for me. Just to clarify, your wireless Internet connection drops periodically and troubleshooting generally recommend that you reset your adapter? Or are your issue different?

Thanks,
Ski
