Solved Explorer.exe and Excel constantly unresponsive

I think you are still dealing with possible malware problems.
Boot into http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/69585-safe-mode.html and update and run malwarebytes again.
Do a full scan this time, it will take time but I'm convinced something is still eating at your system.

I've ran it a few times the past couple days, but it's still not finding anythng and I'm still getting the warning message from symantic endpoint protection

An attempted Hostfile change has been detected

Also still aving explorer freeze-up, although less often than before.

According to Symantec,

"This is an expected behavior if the "Host file change detected" setting in the SONAR component in Virus and Spyware Protection Policies was modified from the default 'Ignore' setting to 'Prompt'."​

Bascially since you changed the setting to PROMPT, any legitimate program that needs to access the HOST file will trigger this alert. And if you replied to the alert by clicking on BLOCK, then you now will have crippled a legitimate program.​
