It's not used by WLM which has it's own contacts grouped with the other WLM data files (appdata/local/Microsoft/windows live contacts) which are hidden in the Explorer view. There are at least two types of contact lists in WLM: signed-in and not-signed-in. You could use the old Contacts Folder to temporarily hold your contacts from Vista and then import them into WLM.

Hi Roncerr

Can I copy all my contacts and all there catgories on an external hard drive, I have been reading your posts but can't find the c:\user\myuserid\appdata path.
The reason I want to do this because I have a printer problem, spool not starting and can't add a printer. I went back to restore to a earlier date and printer came back but after I printed one job it went away again.
Store said I might have to reload windows and don't want to recreate the contact catagories
Thanks

The path is slightly different on 2011 vs. 2009 versions. But the contents of the contacts folder is hidden in Windows Explorer unless you set the folder view option to not hide protected operating system files. If you find them you can save them and drag and drop them into the corresponding Windows Explorer location in the new install. To be safe I'd also use export just in case it doesn't work, however export does not include the categories or groupings, just the contacts themselves.

If you are talking about "signed in" contacts, they will be repopulated from the website "contacts.live.com" when you sign in with the new install. No need to back up since Microsoft has saved them with your Live ID.
