External USD drive runs during "sleep"

Win7 Pro x64.
Windows goes into sleep/hibernate it does not stop an external USB-attached expansion drive when. When Windows does a shutdown it does stop the disk. Is this normal behavior for sleep mode, or do I have something set wrong? It's a Seagate 1TB drive and I'm using a Windows-supplied driver.

The answer is to disable USB when in sleep mode from BIOS. Most motherboard manufacturers have this option. Then your external HDD will power down.

Either that is not an option with the Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R or the option is very well hidden. Anyone know for sure?

Upon further reflection, I don't think that is the answer. First, the drive is externally powered - it does not get its power from the USB connection (although I suppose it could monitor the USB power).

More importantly, during a normal shutdown the external drive shuts down even though USB power is maintained. I think this means Windows is giving the drive some kind of "power down" sequence. This is what I want to happen when entering sleep mode.
