FAQ: Commonly-asked stuff about Windows 7

hi ..
i saw a copy of windows 7 ..
and there was written final rtm 7600 on it .. does it mean that this is a full copy or what ?
p.s : i cant understand some "complicated" words you professionals use ..

sorry for my bad english ..

:)

Final - Is the indicator that it is the final (gold) release.

RTM - Basically the same thing, it means Released To Manufacture.

7600 - There are several Build strings with that in it, but if it has RTM and Final in it, I'd assume it means the actual final version.

A few question you may or may not be able to answer.

Anyone know about how long it might take for the people like me to get Windows 7? I bought a new computer that was on the list of free upgrade. I bought mine from gateway which redirected me to another company handling the distribution for Microsoft " Mentor Media". Are we, last on the list of people to recive a copy? I'm like a kid on Christmas morning, but I didn't get anything lol.

And also, I will be using Premium 64 bit when I get it. Does it use as much resources as the Vista counterpart? I have a AMD x64 dual core and 4 gig of memory. Was woundering what kind of toll the new 7 will take on my pc.

Please include this info in your faq. There has been alot of confusion, and I'm still confused about this issue.

1. Has there ever been rtm or retail release of W7 in which both 32 and 64 come on the same disc so that you can choose which one to install? Or are they always separate?

2. Is it true that rtm and retail/oem are exactly the same thing? I noticed that the retail for W7-64 Ultimate is over $100 more than the OEM. Are they really the same?

3. Editions of W7. Are the installer DVDs for each edition the same where you choose which edition to install (I guess according to serial #)? Or is the installer DVD specific for each particular edition of W7?

Thanks!

Hello Rob,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

I assume you mean the windows.old folder. You can just delete it as long as you have everything you want from the old install. Emails, etc.

OK, here's an interesting twist that may need to be added to the FAQ when it is actually confirmed. I buy $49 Win7HP upgrade on the deal. I, previous to getting it, WIPE and install Win7HP from a MSDN image and rearm it twice till my purchase arrives from Amazon.

When the upgrade disc arrives I do the trick detailed on Paul Thurrott's web site where you do the Change MediaBootInstall from "1" to "0" registry trick, rearm, reboot, paste in bought upgrade key, and continue running the same install.

So here's the question: Is this install considered OEM or Retail?

If it was done how MS wants you to I'm sure it would inherit the OEM or retail type from the OS it was used to upgrade from. What is it in this case?

OEM and retail have nothing at all to do with the install, the disk, the program. OEM and retail are the exact same thing. The only difference is the serial license activation key. There are serial keys that specify that you are a retail customer and keys that specify you are OEM customer. They key has no influence on software capabilities or characteristics.

As such, it will not matter where or how I got the software. If I purchased it from store or from OEM or came with my PC. If I enter OEM key, it just says I'm OEM customer. If I enter retail key, it says I'm retail customer. So I can buy a retail copy, and enter OEM key or whatever key I want. What type of key you enter has no relevance.

Crimson, I certainly hope that reply wasn't to my question, if so it doesn't answer my question at all.

What Crimson is trying to say is that if you bought a retail upgrade key, which you say you did, then your install is retail. If your upgrade came from a manufacturer, then you have OEM. Everything is determined by the key. Hope that clears it up.

Hello.
Does anyone know what is going on in Windows 7 when bootscreen fades away before logon screen shows up? At this time you can see only black screen and a cursor on it. The duration of this state varies greatly from boot to boot, so I'd like to know what is. Any ideas?
Thanks.
