I'm having difficulty setting file permissions and having them stay set on my C: Drive. I'm the only user on my computer and set as admin, yet when I try to set file permissions on some folders (and all sub folders/files) as soon as the process of removing read only is completed, the files are still read only. If you require I could post a video of it on youtube of what I mean.

I have tried something called Take Ownership but thats done jack-all essentially. So far as I can tell, it is also happening to my D: drive as well. I've attempted to alter access nodes for the different user levels however that seems to get reset as well. I change a variable and it appears as though it worked, but if i leave the attributes window and bring it back up immediately, its back to what it was.

Any help is appreciated,

Hi Link,

A video may be helpful in explaining the problem you face.

I'm unsure of what you mean by "read only". Are you referring to the file attribute or the read permissions permission?

You want to make the folders/files executable, writable, deletable? You want to be able to create files/folder as well in that folder?

essentially, yes. I have to save to the desktop then drag files into the folders to modify a file thats in there, and some programs cant modify any of the files even when run as an admin

This tells what happens and how to fix it. You cannot view or change the Read-only or the System attributes of folders in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
But you have to change "file/folder permissions" to be able to get the access you want!

Right click on c:\program files\steam (if that's the folder you want to change) and select properties. Then click tab "security", then button "advanced". Post screenshot.

Also: Right click on c:\program files\steam (if that's the folder you want to change) and select properties. Then click tab "security", then button "advanced", then tab "owner". Post screenshot.

So you actually you want "Full control" on c:\program files\steam and all files and subfolders in it?
If so.... only you or every user on that computer?

Essentially, yes. Im the only user. I'd prefer if all files and folder on both my drives were the same permissions

Will be some delay, at work currently

Which folder names do you want to have fixed?

On non system disk... so D, E, F etc .... all users can read/write/delete etc by default. They can even read/write/delete other user's files. At least that are the default permission settings.

The feature you demonstrate in your video, Link, is called a file attribute and it has absolutely zilch to do with permissions. Take a look at the properties of any odd folder, and you'll see that that "read only" box will (and should) always be shaded blue.

Despite the name, "read only", the file attribute when applied to a folder does not make that folder, as one would imagine, read only. The read only-ness of read only is only effective on files.

File attributes are a completely separate component of Windows from NTFS permissions. Please don't go switching off this read only attribute on folders in hopes that you'll gain more access rights to the item.

As a detour from posting screen shots, Link, you may run and post back the output from the command,
Powershell "(Get-Acl 'C:\Program files\Steam').access"
This will give us a much more precise overview of the permissions that are currently set on this item.

ok I think i got it, re-read #8 and went from there. Looked at permission nodes based on access level and adjusted from there. thanks guys. I guess I'm still use to other os as far as attributes are concerned
