I did a repair install of my w7 and I noticed the two above files. Are they normal after doing this? I thought there was supposed to be a c:\windows.old too but nada.

Yep, they are normal to have after a repair install. From step 21 and 22 in the tut, you can just delete them if you like. They are just part of the Files discarded by Windows upgrade in Disk Cleanup.
