FINALLY UP AND RUNNING 7.. Booya!

Hello everyone. I just wanted to post and say hello. Let everyone know that I am finally up and running Windows 7. 64bit.

So far everything is great. It looks good. even the sad IE8 seems fairly decent so far.

I am liking what I see. Runs well and is smooth. I've not had any problems yet and I'm about to start my installs.

I don't like the taskbar though. I don't like how it doesn't separate what is just down there.. and what you've opened. other than that little dot. Like how do I know IE8 is open. other than just knowing.

I do have a problem so far. I'm not Dual Booting. Right now in win 7 I see my D drive and that is the vista drive. and I installed my X-fi drivers. and when it prompted for restart after install. I did. and it started to vista. and I coulnd't get on the net.. then on reboot it went back to vista. so I had to enter the bios and change what drive to be the primary drive. then it loaded to 7.

I thought I'd get a choice like the safe mode menu.. where I could choose either one.

is there a program I need for the dual booting? do you know

If you installed without changing the boot order, you *should* get a boot menu.

However, you can always use EasyBCD to create a Vista entry for the Windows 7 bcd fiel...or a Win7 entry for the Vista BCD.

In addition to John's post. Double check with this tutorial to see if you may be able to spot anything that you may have done wrong during installation.

yes I read your tutorial.. see I even posted a reply. (BTW.. where it says you where have (to) operating systems.. you meant to say two... like 2. all of the guides are spelled wrong. just thought I'd inform you.

Also yes I followed that. and it's just like that says.

I had my original drive with Vista.. I installed a second HD that was blank.. I then restarted the PC and added a CD. and i didn't need to change anything. it booted right to the CD. (Maybe because my boot order has CD, before HD.. could that be it?)

I went ahead and installed everything. and it restarted and went right into Win 7.. and then it restarted again and went right into W7.. but as soon as I restarted it on my own after an app install. I got sent to Vista. and the net didn't work. that is all I tried.

Also now I'm back in W7. I tried to access files on the old Vista drive. and I didn't have permision. and when I clicked ok to get it.. it never gave it to me.

I wonder if the RC is doing this on purpose b/c it detected your Vista install and the second HD that was empty?

Also what AV are you guys running. I tried to use the same NOD32 Security Suite that I use in Vista.. the guy said I could use more than once. as long as there is only one computer getting updates. I guess 2 OS's could see it as 2 different computers. cuz my password didn't work. but I'm sure it's right.

hopefully it's still going in Vista.. I guess I'll uninstall and get something else. is there a free AV that works. or what are you guys running?

Not sure what to do about the dual boot thing.
When I actually set my boot order. it has cd drive first, the HD drive, could that be it. it's checking to boot from a cd first.. when no CD is in drive it goes right to the first HD.??

Have a look in Disk Management - which partition is showing as System?

I'm using Avast free home edition http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html you need to get a registration key, but it's free.

Oops, thank you Gunther. They have been corrected.

I have mine set to boot from the CD/DVD first to, so that should not be it. You can do as John mentioned with EasyBCD. Steps 6 to 14 in the tutorial below can be a good example to compare with.

What I meant was that since you told it to install to the new HD, and it saw the old Vista partition, it may have temporarily made the Win 7 HD the bootable HD and placed the boot partition on the new drive, avoiding having to mes with the Vista partition - but then it also left the Vista partition alone, which is the default drive set to boot up off of in BIOS....

And I am using Avast! free perfectly fine, along with MBAM (paid).

I cannot say one way or another b/c I have stopped having a backup Vista - I use nothing but Win 7, and I have not installed the RC yet....

so when getting avast.. what version did you get. do they have a Win 7 yet? or what did you download for. vista, or xp or what?

Also yea I could try EasyBCD or whatever. but I'd rather fix whatever this problem is.

Yah, 4.8 Home Edition.

As for fixing the problem - post a screenie of your HD management - I can almost bet it put the boot partition on hte new drive, hence the fact that Vista is not seeing Win 7 and vice versa....

I think your right.. it put BOOT on the new drive.

and there is also some weird **** called system reserved that I've not seen before.

That is normal - if you've ever used *nix, you now have a Windows OS with a 'boot' partition (or, as M$, and only M$, calls it, the *System* partition).

Nope - like I said - that is *normal* on a new clean install.

Since you installed to a separate HD, it seems as if Windows tried to be helpful an completely left the Vista install virginal. Again, you can fix that with EasyBCD - but I'd go through the install again and see if you happened to have set an option to not modify your original boot files / installation, which may have caused this segregation of the OSs....
