Folder won't Delete - ARGH

I have two folders on my desktop, I was able to successfully delete the contents within those two folders, but when I try to delete the actual folder I get this error:

Could not find this item
This is no longer located in X:\Users\<account>\Rouge\Desktop. Verify the items' location and try again.

With the option to TRY AGAIN or CANCEL, Trying again does nothing it just brings the same message up over and over. I've searched in a few places to try to get it to delete, no progress.

The file information under the General tab shows that it opens with Windows Shell Common and it's obviously a 0 Byte file size.

Hi, Try this, open a folder on the desktop and call it whatever you want.
Go back to the folder that you want to delete and Cut it, then paste it into the
folder on your Desktop.

From there try and delete it and see what happens.

You can usually delete these things via DOS.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/55721-folder-delete-command-prompt.html

  1. Call up a command prompt.
  2. Use the cd command to navigate to the parent folder containing the rogue folder (so, for example, cd X:\Users\<account>\Rouge\Desktop).
  3. Use dir to produce a listing of what's there - it should include the rogue folder in the list.
  4. Use rmdir to delete the offending item (e.g. rmdir rogue).
  5. Use dir again to check that the rogue folder is no longer in the list.
  6. Exit the command prompt and check that the rogue folder has gone.
  7. :) (hopefully)

Use unlocker/lockhunter and check whether the folder is being used by any processes. This issue happens, when you actually deleted the folder but it fails to disappear. F5 should fix it or a restart. But, strange ur's didnt.

Unlocker also has an ability to delete the file on restart, try it out.

Or, it could be that the folder is also located in another location that displays to the desktop (such as All Users).

Another party is stating that the MFT has not been updated correctly for whatever reason, and that a
Code:
CHKDSK /x
from a CMD prompt should reboot your machine, run CHKDSK and fix the issue. (It will prompt you to reboot so it can run CHKDSK - allow it to).

Might want to make a backup of files Just in case you have larger issues and things get hosed a bit....

The file assassin tool in malwarebytes is a great tool. It was the only way I could get rid of the google update service. I didn't even have to log off or restart to implement the changes.

None of those suggestions worked :( Malwarebytes did find two pieces of Malware and that got removed, but the folders won't delete. I'm going to need something with military force to delete these folders.

Have you restarted you machine?

I've found that W7 sometimes DOES delete the file/folder but then is sticks there until reboot and any further attempt to delete the now "missing" folder results in that message.

Just a thought from the past.

What about the very old DOS trick on files and folders that won't delete. Right drag it and move it to a floppy, CDR disk or maybe another partition. I haven't had any thing I couldn't get rid of yet under Win 7 so I can't verify that the method will work here.

I've tried all of these suggestions, nothing is working. I even tried in the Command Prompt to delete it. The CMD prompt mentions it can't find the file, ARGH this is insane a 0 Byte folder with no use, won't delete.

Right click and run as admin Malwarebytes AntiMalware
Go to More Tools Tab
Under File Assassin, click Run Tool
Select your Folder/File

The File Assassin Tool in MalwareBytes only works with files, folders it won't recgonize :(

Have you tried, using the command window approach, to navigate via DOS to the desktop folder for your user account and then using dir to get a listing of objects there? Does the folder appear in that list?
