forced reboot on update?

I don't know if it's the right place but I hope so

Recently I've been working in word and then suddenly the computer started to shutdown and install some update. After that it rebooted and restored everything (much like after hibernation). Why did this happen? Shouldn't I get some sort of info that the update requires the system to reebot and let me decide WHEN I want that to happen? Is it some new microsoft policy to do that?
My updates are set to automatically download and install.

well under the settings given when you use automatically download and install the group policy editor default is to warn you 5 minutes prior to an automatic reboot, you can however turn this off if you have access to group policy editor which is available in professional, ultimate and enterprise

It can be well awkward if your not paying attention, in fact I was in the middle of a raid playing WOW with a few mates and my computer decided it was going to reeboot then once back to desktop it proudly announced it had installed updates

let me know if you want to turn this option off

I've got home premium so I guess it's not possible? If it is then please tell me how to disable this patronizing Microsoft attitude

Or you could set to download and ask you when to install. I never use automatic for those reason and a few other reasons.

agree with Sbrideau, to me the best logical choice is to notify when updates are available. This will mean it will still check for updates automatically but if they available you get a balloon popup telling you so and it then waits for you to click on the balloon to start the install procedure, even then when they installed if a reboot is needed you have to manually issue the reboot it is not automatic. If you get harrassed for not enabling full automatic updates then the check for automatic updates in the action centre can be overriden no problem.
