Solved Formatting a SSD in Windows 8

Has anybody formatted a SSD with Disk Management in Windows 8 and does diskmgmt do the alignment ??

I always format with cmd. But now I have this kid on the line that cannot deal with cmd. I wonder whether I can suggest diskmgmt as alternative.

Unfortunately I have no unused SSD lying around to try it.

Hi Wolfgang. I just reformatted a HDD today using disk management in Windows 8 and when I checked the offset, it was 1024 Kbs. This being the case, I would think that it would set up an SSD with the same offset.

WHS, I have never done it in Windows 8, but have in Windows 7 and it aligns it correctly. If you need me to, let me know and give me a few minutes and I'll try it in Windows 8. I'll have to remove one from My 7 machine and put it into my 8 Laptop.

EDIT: Yes, it will do it correctly. I just did it in Windows 8 disk management.

Not really - then I rather do it with Command Prompt. With PW you have to first define an itty, bitty partition at the beginning of the drive. That is handy if you have to fix a misalignment in 20/20 hindsight.

windows 8 file recognition and formatting appears more powerful than win7 in my limited use of it , works well so far for me on SSD

In fact I lost an SSD that went into low power state, and did 3 power cycles with windows 8 on a USB connection to it and recovered the drive
